2nd gear grinding

Since Ive had the car sometimes it grinds in second gear. It doesnt matter if Im shifting fast or shifting soft. It will just not line up and grind. Ive made it a point to make sure my foot was completely down on the clutch but to no avail. This was happening before and after the CDV so that isnt the culprit. Its only second gear also, none of the others and only when upshifting. Im thinking its gotta be the synchros but Im sure BMW would place the blame on my mods or just say they couldnt replicate the situation.

Anyone else getting this as well?

You know, my first few hundred miles I would grind when I'd do some faster shifting, but since then, I have ( 0 ) grinding and I haven't changed my style of shifting.... Im with you on it being synchros

If you are sure what you are doing, you better take to back to the dealer and have them check out the gear box. Alternatively, get someone who also drives a MT and see if they are also grinding in 2nd.

I would have the transmission fluid changed first and see if you notice a differance. If not take it to the dealer and have them replace the worn synchro.

I used to get it as well.....kinda sucked. But i think, like CHESMU, I may have gotten used to it after 5K-6K hence it not happening to me anymore. FUnny thing is I still "fear" it coming so I think I now unconsciously shift with a delay to make sure the gear gets into place. This of course results in a not-so-smooth 1st to 2nd gear shift. But since my CDV is out, I don't really want to go back to the dealer to have them look at my syncro.

I am having the same problem. There is definitely something wrong with the 1st to 2nd sunchro, Some times when I shift to 2nd and I know I had the clutch all the way down the shift stops as if you fully engage and then when I let the clutch out it grins. Even if I push the clutch back in and try to pull back further it will not go, I have to shift out of 2nd, into neutral then let the cluck out and back in then it will engage 2nd.

I got almost 10K on mine and I am about to take it in for the yearly service so I am going to get this documented so it fails later I made sure they knew about now.

But I'll put money that this should fix things for you b/c if you don't align your shifter correctly you will get some sort of grinding
AFAIK, I pull straight down but this is something Ill keep an eye on. Most of the time this happens Im going straight so I think I would be pulling it back in line. I could see using it as a crutch when turning and holding on and pulling it towards you when shifting. Regardless, I see when its happening what Im actually doing.

No, I meant what I said. Using the shift lever as a crutch for holding on in a turn. Like using your knee against the side of the door to keep you in place. I could see that if Im doing that while shifting, then Im not pulling back on the shifter straight like the other poster mentioned.

J/K...I understood what you meant, it just brought up a mental image of Matsui trying to say "clutch"...

HyperM3,

Are you still getting a grind?

My problem has been 5th gear not 2nd, but the symptoms are similar enough. My dealer claims to have changed the entire transmisssion, but the problem still persists.

Your dealer may very well claim to not be able to duplicate your problem, but you just need to ask to have a dealer rep come with you so you can demonstrate. Through my research, I've noticed that 2nd gear is the most common gear to grind.

Have a read through this thread?

Mine is an ongoing saga yet to be resolved...

Good luck

Yeah, I read your thread. I am too lazy to worry about them not being able to reproduce the problem. Considering I cant even reproduce it when I want, I know it will be an issue for them. I dont want to go through the same situation you did where they replaced it and its still the same.

That being said, Ive been paying attention to the way I shift and it seems to have gotten better. Although its mostly under hard acceleration that it wants to grind, like the flywheel wont stop spinning to let the clutch engage.

+1

I used to grind too and then discovered that I was pulling slightly to the left. Must have been penned up tension in my right hand that I was trying to relieve . I started shifting very formal, sort of going back to basics and found that when I am a sloppy driver I get sloppy shifts. When I sat correctly, had good posture and gripped the stick correctly I could slide through the gears pretty easily.

Suit yourself. I suspect the grind you have is rather mild considering your passive stance.

At times, mine is so loud the vibrations are so great, that is seems as if you are travelling on the "you drifted over the white lines so wake up" strips on the side of the highway.

Its serious, so I have no choice but to follow up. I certainly don't want to foot the bill on a what will surely be an expensive fix when car hits 51,000 miles.

It seems that the grind youre experiencing and the one Im experiencing are different. Mine is just when the shift is taking place, not after like it seems with yours. Mine is a quick gear grind, not a loud car vibrating grind. Thus the reason I can live with it. Secondly, my car is a lease so Im not worried about being stuck with it at 51k miles. Another reason I lease cars, I never run out of warranty.

I have had a few of those incidents happen in the last 2 year but I've ignored them. Today, however things really hit the fan. I went from 1st to 2nd at about 5500 rpm and I heard a loud bang. 2nd gear completely went on me and the car only has 23000 miles and is a lease. I wonder if it's covered by warranty. I really hope so.
