motul gear 300 or MTF2 opinions
I'm getting ready to replace the tranny fluid in the M Coupe and am leaning toward using Motul Gear 300 75W90 instead of MTF2. Here are some facts for both:
GEAR 300 75W-90 Racing gearbox and differential lubricant 100% Synthetic – Ester based TYPE OF USE Specially designed for racing vehicle gearboxes : speed way, rallye, raid… All mechanical transmission, synchronised or not synchronised gearboxes, gearbox/differential, transfer gearboxes and hypoïd differentials without limited slip system operating under shocks, heavy loads and low revolution speed or moderate loads and high revolution speed. PERFORMANCES 100% synthetic extreme pressure lubricant for an efficient anti wear protection, a better resistance at high temperature and a longer life time. 0% shear loss : Unshearable oil film in extreme conditions. Stays in 90 grade after KRL 20 hours shear test as requested by SAE J306 Standard, July 1998 update Very high lubricating power which decreases friction and wear. 90 grade at hot temperature to provide outstanding oil film resistance at hot temperature and/or to reduce transmission noise. Fluid at low temperature to allow easier gear shifting when the gearbox is cold. Less effort required on the gear lever to shift the gears. Suitable for any type of seal and yellow material used in gearboxes design. Anti-corrosion, Anti-foam. Pentosin MTF 2 is a fully synthetic gear oil with all purpose performance for manual transmissions. This manual transmission oil is formulated with modern EP-additives, high shear stable VI improvers and premium synthetic base oils. Pentosin MTF 2 improves synchronization characteristics and was lowered to SAE 75W-80 for better fuel economy. Here are the Specs for comarison: PROPERTIES Motul gear 300 / Pentosin MTF2 (OEM) Viscosity grade: SAE 75W-90 / SAE 75W-80 Viscosity at 40°C (104°F): 72.6 mm²/s / 38.3 mm²/s Viscosity at 100°C (212°F): 15.2 mm²/s / 7.7 mm²/s Viscosity index VIE: 222 / 177 Flash point: 200°C (392°F) / 228°C (442.4°F) Pour point: -60°C (-76°F) / <-60°C (<-76°F) Specification Met: API GL4 and GL5 / API GL-4 Cost: ~$17 per liter / ~$25 per liter Has anybody used Motul before and/or does anybody see anything that would make it NOT compatible with our ZF transmissions? |

A good number of us are using RP synchromax (trany only)

I just got done looking at RP's viscosity. The numbers are all very similar to MTF2. Looks like Motul is thicker when cold, but since it has a higher VI, it won't thin out as much with higher temps. It might make for harder shifts when cold, but would offer better protection when hot.

I got done with tranny fluid replacement yesterday. One thing I can say is that ester based synthetic fluids are pretty rank. Here are some pics.
Got my stubby 8mm hex as part of a set at Northern tool. That's it and a 1/4" to 3/8" adapter. I'll use the 14mm for the diff fluid next. Here is what I used...Motul Gear 300 LS (with friction modifiers) and my stubby hex set box. Neat trick that the bottle does...not that we can use it for tranny though. It's been raining here all day today, so I haven't had a chance to drive it yet. I ended up putting all 2 liters in (even though TIS says that drain/fill is 1.5L). I'll post some reviews later. |

I use a 50/50 mixture of Red Line MTL and MT90 in my Z4M transmission.
I use Red Line 80W140 in the differential.
