Staggering tires on non-staggered 17" wheels -- possible?

I have original 17" non-staggered wheels. Tires need replacing. Can I make the rears wider than the fronts, keeping in mind I have an XI? Thanks!

New poster by the way. Look forward to many more posts!

Not sure why you would want staggered tires. Aren't you getting enough understeer with your current setup?

You can go with a staggered tire setup on an xi/xdrive as long as the rolling diameter between the front and rear tires are within 3 revs per mile.

As Tom mentioned it will give you more understeer. Essentially the car will want to continue tracking straight when you're going around a corner despite wanting to turn sharper. This will generally only be noticeable if you track the car.
