What's the advantage

... of placing order and waiting for your new car? I see a lot of posts where ppl say say place an order and ready to wait for 3 months to get the car, as opposed to just pick up the one on the parking lot.

umm...i think thats pretty clear!
most importantly, you get to pick out your own colors/options/accessories etc....
versus just taking whatever they have left on the lot, and besides im not sure where you live but most dealers don't have any 07 models left....so now your looking at waiting for an 08, which will only start production in early september!

Ya I agree with slammed. It's so you can get exactly what you want, as opposed to settling for whats on the lot. If a dealer has exactly what you want already on the lot, then I guess your set. That's pretty rare.

It's always worth looking at what's on the lot as well. I wanted a 335xi, AW, sport, premium, cold, terra/alum. I went in thinking I was going to be ordering and sure enough there it was on the lot. No waiting - made the deal and picked it up the next morning.

Actually if you want a 335i Coupe or Convertible, you really HAVE to order. The demand for these cars excedes the supply. There have just not been many, if any, units sitting on the lots. You would be extremely lucky just to find one. Even more lucky if it was an acceptable color combo with equippment you want. So if you want one, (and I, like others, want it to be just the right color with the right options) you will NEED to order it.(If you can find a dealer with the allotment) .

thanks, guys!
I'm in Toronto, plenty of BMW dealers (like 10) and their stock is usually very decent.

I found that most 335's on the lots were fully loaded. They had things that I didnt want or need (rear sun shade, active cruise control, etc). Also, it depends on if your looking for a 328 or 335.

very true,
here in toronto a 335 was almost impossible to get for the past 2 months basically, but they had 328s by the dozen

As others have stated, doing a custom order is one way to get EXACTLY what you want. I also live in an area with a large number of dealers (Northern NJ, NYC area), but most of the cars on the dealer's lot did not match what I wanted.

There don't seem to be very many manual transmission cars in the area, and the ones that I saw were were very lightly optioned. Most of the fully loaded models had automatic. If you are looking for an automatic, as most people these days are, then you probably won't see anything wrong with taking a car off the lot.

It also depends on which gearbox you want, usually they don't stock many manuals (at least in NJ). The CA I went to said they barely even order them for their inventory, the same thing happened when I went to 2 different Audi dealerships, all the A4s and S4s were triptronic.

My experience is that dealer may have a few 335i's on lot, but with alot of options (or colors) folks don't want. I did not want a bunch of gadgets, just a car that was fun to DRIVE. I got SP, grey leather, AT/ w paddles. I had rather listen to the engine vs an ipod and my butt could care less about bun warmers. I ordered and got what I wanted. Also, the dealer cars are used as demonstrators, check mileage.

I agree with forrest above. My dealer offered me a car off the lot when I ordered and offered to take 30 cents per mile off since it was a test drive car. You gotta be kidding me,......I said. NO way!! I ordered mine waited 10.5 weeks and I'm very happy. If everyone test drives the car the way I do then I feel sorry for the guy that buys it,....although it is a great engine and can probably take the abuse. Certainly didn't wait for the breakin period though,...or even the car to really warm up before I pushed the engine on a test drive. Some of you may be thinking its not right to be pushing a car and "abusing" it a bit just cuz its not yours and you will give it back, but how else am I supposed to tell which car to pay nearly $60000 for in about 20 minutes or less. This is my first BMW and most expensive car I have bought to date. NO WAY am I settling for what someone else decided were the right features or colors. Besides the test drive cars had like 600 miles on it. To me any car over 20 miles is used.

Yeah exactly as stated before, getting exactly what you want. I was LUCKY and I found pretty much exactly what I want the day I went and got it within 3 days, the only thing I didnt get was the interior color but I got grey so it works enough and i'm happy considering thats the only thing I didnt get exactly the way I wanted. But again this is rare to get all the options you want, wheels, colors.

You get the car that you want but you end up paying more for it since you dont have the ultimate negotiation power of walking away.

I'm one of those "rare" ones, as the exact car I wanted (no compromises) was on the lot.
