Tire Insurance - 19" 403M's
What does everyone think about tire insurance? I know its insurance and someone has to come out ahead in the transaction, but... I'm in the city ( construction, potholes, streetcar tracks ) and these summers are 19"ers. I've never had such low profiles before and don't know if it will up the odds for tire and/or rim damage.
With that said, Yes/No? ( don't know how to make a poll yet ) If yes, what do you think is a "fair" price? ( Also remember, I'm in Canada eh? )

If you lease your car, maybe it's a good idea. Reason being when you return your car at end of lease term, BMW Canada may not be too picky if you have the insurance.
You should have considered this coverage when getting the new car, if you are already driving it, it would be tougher to get any discount off the tire insurance coverage. |

Say if you don't get the insurance ....
The 19" tire would probably cost you $400 (non dealer price) if you need to have it replaced. 19" rim would probably be in the $700 Cdn dealer price. But US dealer will probably sell for $400 US. If you do get the insurance, Cdn dealer markup is around 50%, but obviously, if you can get it like 15% off their asking price, you can consider it. Just personal experience, I have driven bimmer for the last 5 yrs (different models) and I have yet to encounter any tires/rims issues, given I rarely drive in downtown T.O., almost 100% uptown, east & west of Toronto. |

Thanks for the cost breakdown and thoughts... If I killed 2 tires AND 2 rims then it'd pay for itself. The odds of 2 tires AND 2 rims doesn't sound very likely to me...
Actaully, come to think of it, these days I try not to drive downtown and just subway it. I think I just made up my mind... Thanks bobblehead!

No problem.
..... just a thought ! Can you write off/expense the car's monthly payment, if leasing or financing thru employment or your own business, if so, maybe it's worth a look. Quote:

I've done it on all of my cars. On the last one (2009 E90), insurance replaced 5 tires and 2 wheels. Well worth the money if you do the math. Potholes - as small as they appear - just killed me. But the insurance was a savior!

It's a tough call but, as Mrcarcrazy mentioned, it's an "up-to-you thing" that you'll have to decide upon. I don't know the odds of wheel damage are where you live but I have been living in the city for a long time and have never had any wheel damage (could just be due to awareness and luck) but if it were to happen I would love to have the coverage. But, given my personal odds up to this point, I will probably decline the coverage through BMW and spend ~$200 at Discount Tire for tire coverage alone. I'm pretty sure that will cover itself within the given time span of coverage.

I bought it. My car has 20" BMW 361 rims with Pirelli P Zero summers. I live in NYC and in 7 months I have already gone through 2 tires and a rim. Thats $1300 that I didn't have to pay. The insurance cost me $1800 and I the lease has another 29 months left to go, so for me it's definately been worth it.
