Cracked Windscreen

Well, as the title suggests I now have a cracked windscreen.

A rock hit at 70mph near the top corner of the windscreen and instantly a crack appeared.

Phoned up the number on the insurance and got through to Autoglass who couldn't find a windscreen on their system which incorporated the HUD so they're now going to contact BMW to find out which part number the windscreen will be and order it in.

I now have to drive around for 5 days before they can get it in stock and come out and change it.

Looks like I'll have to drive a bit more carefully these next few days

Absolutely gutting....but surely you must be one of the first in the country to require a new HUD windscreen, so a minor claim to fame

I would hate to think of the cost

Ooooft! Gutted for you.

Is it safe to drive? Hope it get sorted rapid and the cops don't catch you driving with it. Although, my knowledge of legal issues surrounding cracked windscreens is non existent!

Yeah, it's a shame but at least it's nothing that can't be fixed. At least the windscreen took the proverbial bullet and not the paintwork

I'm not sure where I stand legally, if in doubt I'll just swear blind it's just happened I was told it was safe to drive with it like that so I would assume it was legal. If the worst happens and I get pulled up for it I'll let you know how I get on.

I reckon I must be the first as they don't even seem sure which windscreen I need. At least they knew what the HUD was though. I had to explain it to the BMW Emergency person I spoke to. Even now I don't think she fully understood what I was going on about

I've now officially spent more on windscreens than I have on fuel for the car

AFAIK Legally as long as it is not in the drivers main field of vision it is ok.

I would imagine that the crack will spread if you drive it, although should be OK for 5 days.

You're right...good job it didn't hit the paint.

So sorry to hear this. Not the nicest way to break-in a virgin.

Just make sure that when they replace the windscreen they do so with the greatest of care and don't damage the surrounding paintwork. It's been known to happen. Watch them like a hawk.

Just slap some gaffer tape over it and you'll be fine!

This morning on my drive to work in the howling gales and lashing rain the windscreen held

I also decided to be a bit more cautious than normal and so engaged Eco Pro mode. Quite surprisingly on my 40 mile drive to and from work I managed to save 6.2 miles. Not bad considering everything. Ok, I may have been a bit overly cautious and very light on the accelerator but even so I was quite surprised.

Still can't wait to get the windscreen fixed though and drive properly again

BMW windscreens are crap. I got a stone chip in the glass on day #2 of ownership.

I've had more stonechips on the BMW than all the other cars I've ever had since the beginning of time, put together.

On the evidence which is quite literally in front of me I can't but agree with you! Although I at least managed to get to day 21.

The original chip isn't all that significant either. I've had worse on other cars and never had it crack but this one was cracked almost straight away.

Ive had 6 windscreens in 4 yrs on my E90, 2 within 6 days of one another!! Prior to that I had never had a windscreen replaced.....

Collecting my new 330d Msport on Monday, i was hoping that the F30 might have a more resilient windscreen, perhaps not? only 2 sleeps left

LOL no, predominantly around Cornwall......several have been large stones flicked up by lorries travelling in the opposite direction, have also been hit by a 'bouncing potato' from the back of a tractor/trailer combo!!

I'd like to think I was just unlucky, being that millisecond further along the road than was needed to avoid the stone altogether. If it happens again though then I may start to rethink that!

First time I've ever had a windscreen crack though so who knows, maybe BMW windscreens are a bit more fragile than others.....

Can't think why BMW screens should be more fragile, unless they use thinner glass for weight saving???

Just as a quick follow up, I had a call from Autoglass today to say that the windscreen won't be manufactured until at least week 43 as there is a supply problem. This means that the windscreen will then take a further 2 weeks or so to get delivered into the UK and onto Autoglass so possibly mid November at the latest

If you've got a windscreen with HUD, look after it. Those replacements are tough to come by.

Also, if you've got a car about to be built with HUD as an option it could be worth checking with your dealer to see if there have been delays with the order.

Wow, has the crack spread at all? Is it still safe to use?

It's definitely growing even though I have been nursing the car that little bit more than usual. As far as I know it's still safe to drive. I have been repeatedly assured this is the case but that's not stopped me looking for routes with fewer speed bumps If it grows beyond the half way point of the window I'll be taking it in for professional assessment.
