DIY-e90 outside mirror cover

With a few vendors offering CF mirror cover (not the glue on type), I thought I get busy taking mine apart. Yeah, ppl say it is very easy to do but no one offer a dyi. So here is one. Now that I have done it, yes it is the easiest thing to take apart (easier then the shift knob) .

Step 1) place your fingers (dont use any tools or you will scratch the plastic cover ) in the crease and slowly applied pressure and push out the cover in the direction of the red arrow. Do that all around the mirror and before you know it, the cover will fall straight to the ground so make sure you have something nice and cushy on the ground to catch it.

That is it, you are finish, now go drink a beer.

To remove the black plastic piece opposite the cover, untwist the plastic nuts (yellow circle) and lift the tabs around the mirror (yellow arrow).

Oh, I got a closeup of the female clip (red circle).

Thanks for the detailed write up. You just might get the people here on this forum the motivation to start purchasing the CF replacements...

How do you remove the actual glass in the mirror?

Are there screws that hold in place that are accessed by taking the cover off? Or is it the push/pull on the corners of the mirror like in the older bmw's. I tried to do that yesterday and it wouldn't budge!

Great stuff. Never realized how easy it is, thanks for showing us. I very well might go paint the black surround body colored now!

The actual body colored cover have no screws. You just pull it toward the front of the car.

I want to try to make the mirrors tune out further than stock--I've got blind spots as it is. I'm looking to do a DIY for the "wide-eye" mod.

I have not mess with the glass mirror myself. Someone on here did replace a broken glass mirror. YOu should do a search. I dont remember who it was and how it was done. All I remember from that thread is that it was easy to replace the glass mirror.

I found it, here is the thread, llok like it just snap into place and no mention of screws. PM the guy for more detail. GL.

Awesome! I have been wondering how to take these off. I'm going to wrap the black trim piece in 3M Di-NOC CF vinyl. Not too crazy about the mirror cover. Especially on AW, unless there is a theme to it.
