There's usually a brochure at your dealership, and the site is mentioned in your owner's manual somewhere. |

My GF's had recurring ignition coil issues on her E46 (M54) that the dealership's been very forceful in blaming on Mobil gasoline. Every time it comes up (twice trips now) I ask how the hell dodgy gas can affect the coils and they mumble something semi-coherent about mobil using cheap formulations or something like that.
Anyway, coherency of argument notwithstanding she's now avoiding mobil gas. we'll see if the coils wig out again. |

I was told by the service guy at my dealership Exxon\Mobil is not good at all because the ethanol in the gasoline, gives the N54 problems. I had posted this
a about a month ago and I was basically laughed at. But if you look on page 201 of your owners manual state. " Fuels containing up to and including 10% ethanol or other oxygenates, will not VOID warranties." leading me to believe that any gas with 10% ethanol is bad for the engine. That means our cars are not running the way they should because most of the gas that we use in the US has 10% ethanol, no matter what the octane rating.

Yeah, I did not know about the 10% ethanol until yesterday when I actually looked on the side of the pump and saw it

I know. But the main question is, that if BMW knows these cars are coming to the US, why don't they make the proper modifications to the N54 to take that 10% difference in ethanol?

There's actually a test we do on a fuel sample from the cars to determine the actual amount of ethanol in the fuel. It always seems to be a crapshoot. Some of the fuels I test have 0 ethanol, others up to 20%. There's even been a service roundtable covering the damages to fuel system components (fuel pumps!!) due to excessive ethanol in the fuel.
Use the top tier stuff guys, it's the best stuff you can put in your car.

Yes, they (all six) were replaced once on recall (after the CEL was on) and two or three more again a year or so later. On both trips we were strongly advised to avoid Mobil stations in the chicago metro area.
I still don't understand the correlation between ethanol and ignition coils, though... |

Speaking of bad gas and bad fuel pumps, my car is at the dealer because I was experiencing fuel pump and/or bad gas symptoms. Yesterday they said there is an anomaly in the cars system . I wish they just tell the truth and say its the fuel pump for sh*t sakes.
