Comparo/Review: 2013 F10 M5 vs E63 AMG vs E60 M5 Night Shots Included

* All personal driving experiences may vary, but as an absolute lifelong automobile enthusiast the following comments are purely based on my honest opinion of the three German Sports Sedans that I have been fortunate enough to have driven.

Breakdown:

2008 BMW E60 M5: Alpine White LCI modded with Stage 2 RPi M5 Kit, RPi/ESS ECU Tune, RPi/ESS SMG Tune, KW V3 Coil Overs,
Klassen 20" 10.2 Wheels, Full Vorsteiner Body Kit., and Custom Carbon Trim.

2010 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG W212: Triple Black modded with Klassen CSV 20" Concave Wheels, Full Vorsteiner Body Kit, and H&R Suspension,.

2013 BMW F10 M5: Alpine white equipped with X3SW, ZDA, 2NZ, 6F2, 6FH, 6UK, XE7

Not long after the first LCI E60 BMW M5 was introduced to North America, I was fortunate enough to be able to take over a lease from a very good friend FLYM5. The S85 V10 SMG was one of the, if not, the fastest production Sports Sedans at the time . But within a few years, Mercedes Benz countered with their massive 6.3 liter V8 AMG engine. My lease soon came to an end and I was left with the difficult decision of a worthy successor to the almighty E60 M5 V10. My love for Sport Sedan eventually led me to E63 AMG, which remained to hold the throne for the next two years. When BMW answered with the F12/F13 Twin Turbo charged V8 I soon ran it against the E63 AMG. During a 2nd gear rolling start as well as a 3rd gear pull the M6 immediately pulled on the E63 by 1.5-2 car lengths and continued to pull similar to the way the Nissan GTR did. At that moment I soon realized that the naturally aspirated E63 AMG, 6.3 Liter V8 had met it's match.

Comparing both the beast of a Mercedes W212 E63 AMG to the new Twin Turbo V8 F10 M5 from BMW, the most noticeable difference is clearly the Dual Clutch Transmission. The BMW DCT is far superior to the Mercedes Benz MCT! Although the Mercedes Benz MCT eventually killed the BMW SMG, the wet clutch proved to be no match for the F10 M5 DCT. Between the constant pull from the twin turbos and ultra smooth shifting the BMW, in my opinion, has truly regained the Sport Sedan market. The next noticeable difference was the lack of the turbo torque. The E63 has gobs of torque but the rush of the twin turbos clearly prove that forced induction engines, in my opinion, are far superior to NA engines.

Just the other day a friend who owns a 2012 Black Edition GTR modded with catless race down pipes, full titanium exhaust, and Cobb Dyno Tune and I decided to go on a spirited run for the south of the border. The first run was taken place from the dig which the GTR instantly pulled 1.5 car lengths in first gear. During second gear the F10 M5 began to reel in the GTR. Unfortunately, due to lack of space, the run was cut short. We then proceeded to several second gear highway pulls up through the end of third gear. Keep in mind the GTR had 22" diameter wheels and a 155 lb passenger (rotational mass and un-sprung weight disadvantage) and the M5 had just myself behind the wheel. After the third honk, the BMW M5 took a slight lead, after immediately shifting to third the GTR reeled in the M5 and remained dead even through the end of third gear. It would be interesting to see how the BMW M5 would hold up against the GTR and other high performance vehicles once a tune, down pipes and an exhaust is installed.

Attached below are a couple of night shots I took earlier tonight. Thank you for reading and all comments are welcome!!

Beautiful car.

Did you tint the tail lights? Maybe it's just the light at night, but they look darker.
