335 on order - should I cancel / change to a 328?
So,
I've been getting steadily more worried about the 335's fuel pump problems. I'm strongly considering changing my order to a 328xi Coupe, or just cancelling and waiting to see what happens. Anyone got any thoughts? -Alistair |

Ditto. You're letting a vocal minority sway your decision.

I really thought BMW would have this properly addressed by now--but they seem ready to let it ride a little.
The 328i is a great car--I love mine--but if you are looking for the acceleration that the 335i provides--you will likely regret your choice. Of course--it's a catch 22--if the damn thing has fuel pump problems, then it is hard to enjoy.

Its not every 335 that has a fuel pump problem. You only hear about it more because enthusiasts are on the forum bitching about it. You dont hear much about the outside world having these issues though. You take it with a grain of salt. There are tons of us who havent had any issues yet.
Do you realize how many people smoke and yet they know it will kill them? Yet, they all had to pick up the cig in the first place with that knowledge before they tried it. Driving a 335 wont kill you and the thrill of it lasts longer than a nicotine high.

imho don't change to a 328 if the fuel pump issue bothers you, just cancel altogether. You will not lose money by canceling the order and redoing it in the future. If there is a price increase, so be it. We're talking about a lot of money and there's no need to feel uncomfortable about such a large purchase. If you don't need your deposit right now, you can also wait for the car to come in, and if you don't want it, ask for your deposit back. It really is your money and your decision.

Which would you rather have. The car you want that goes like stink with a POTENTIAL fuel pump issue. OR the car you really don't preferr that does not have the perfomance you want but without the POTENTIAL fuel pump issue. BTW, my 335i runs great . No fuel pump problem. 3/07 build. Not dissing the 328, its just not a 335i.

The 335 doesnt have a fuel problem, they have a fuel pump problem. The vendor who is suppling them to BMW didn't do their homework and built them with a faulty design. This has been an issue for 5+ months now and the new re-designed part should be in production soon. Though, an official stance from BMW on what is exactly being done would be nice, it understood why BMW is just replacing them (at the vendors cost) until new ones are available. -Garrett |

I drive the 328 as a loaner - its a different car..yes it was an impressive car - the engine revs great although I found it a bit tiresome with the auto doing a lot of work maximizing the engine output. The 335 gives me very different impression - its almost as if it is hardly trying at all. Fuel pump is not a big deal - you limp home, it's under warranty.

That's a bit of an overstatement.

Keep your order for the 335i; if you change it to the 328i, you'll definitely be kicking yourself in the as$...especially if you get a 335i loaner while your 328i is getting serviced.

Keep the 335! If you really want a 328, a manual is the only choice that will make you happy. I have a 328 steptronic, and the GM sourced auto in the E9X 328s sucks. Having said this, the ZF auto in the 335 is great, so in the 335 choice of tranny is really only personal preference. In the 328s, the step is so poor that it ruins the ability to use torque/trottel control to support cornering.
Test drive didn't reveal this to me (not long enough, not the right kind of roads) but having lived with the car for 2,200 miles is enough to tell. |
