HPFP? (Video) Worth sending in?
EDIT: Turned out to the the HPFP. Read last post.
Hey guys, it's my first time posting a thread here so please forgive me if I'm reposting or breaking any rules. I have a video of my car when it starts. It takes about 40% longer than usual to crank/start. The RPMs fluctuate, and the car is rough and sounds horrible. Here is the video: A week ago I noticed that the idle was just a little bit rough. Yesterday it cranked just a second longer. Then I got the half engine light, limp mode, fluctuating RPMs, "putting sound" in the exhaust, loss of power etc. What do you guys think? Could it be HPFP? Maybe injectors? The car was bought used over a year ago. Apparently the HPFP was already replaced once. From reading the forums, I know that if the HPFP is the problem, it will be covered under the extended emissions warranty. The car is now out of warranty.. it's a 2007 BMW 335i e92. I live near Toronto. My fear is that they will charge me $279 for a diagnostic if it is not the HPFP. From watching the video, what are your opinions? Thank you in advance. Sounds like my car did when the injectors went out. I've had 3 hpfp fail they never produced symptoms this bad.
If it is your injectors, and they have not been replaced under warranty before, you should have them covered under a recall for 2007. Others may have a better opinion. Also, did you scan for codes?

EDIT: Nevermind, I think I found it: "SI B13 14 10 Fuel Systems - December 2010 Technical Service" And I don't have any equipment to scan for codes unfortunately. I guess I would need BT for that? Last edited by 19E92; 08-31-2012 at 01:13 AM.. |

You might be able to get the information you need with an OBDII scanner. Don't rule out the hpfp yet. gl man

Thanks for the link man.
I tried running my OBD2 scanner but there were no error codes. Might be too BMW specific. Is it safe to say though that it's either injectors or HPFP and that it should be covered under "recall warranty" (even though my warranty is finished)? Quote:

I'm the wrong guy to be asking. Sounds like you need a good Indy shop, or that you just need to bite the bullet

I'm hoping to hear some more opinions from others. So far: Injectors - 1 member(s). HPFP - 0 members. |

I can definitely see the valves causing issues with a smooth idle, however I don't think it's what's causing the problem in my video. But you're right, I may consider cleaning the valves out after the injectors/hpfp are replaced if the idle isn't as smooth as I'd like.

Update: Took the car into the dealer, and told them I thought my pump was bad. They said that they needed to charge me for a diagnostic. First, the diagnostic was going to cost me $280, then we agreed upon $140. They checked the car over and called me the next day. They said the ECU needed to be reprogrammed. $500. I approved the work. I get a call back...shocker... its not the ECU. The car still has the same problems.
The tech says that they need to check the turbos because there are turbo codes being thrown and also high pressure codes being thrown. I told him its not the turbos. He agreed, but said BMWNA was involved now and they were following orders from them. Fast forward 2 days. "Hey, its the fuel pump". Sigh... don't they have this thing down to a science by now? Anyways, just an update to help anyone who may be having the same problems. Take care |
