Hey guys,

I wanted to change my tranny fluid I have around 50,000 miles on the car now. I was wondering if there is a DIY page on this process?

Also, what are some good transmission fluid you guys are using? I live up in Toronto, so have decently hot summers and the same goes for winter.

Just for reference I have a 2008 335i coupe.

FWIW I used Royal Purple's product in my 6MT, it felt great at first but rapidly degraded and felt horrible after a few thousand miles.

Shell out for the OEM fluid at your BMW dealership.

Yeah for regular daily driving and if you don't want to be changing your tranny fluid annually, go OEM.

Oh I had no idea the aftermarket tranny oil did not last as long as OEM thanks for the heads up. Anyone know of a place online that sells OEM fluid for a decent price?

Neg. I was able to pick up enough from my dealer for < 50$.

cool thanks never knew.

service didnt know what trans fluid to use, i guess they were stumped when they read auto trans fluid... as was/am I. So they couldnt quote me for the oil. Damn car prob syncro problem would grind when cold or rarely when romping on. made my 0-60 5.6 instead of 4.5 . but i digress.

please let us know how the transmission shifts after the change.

If I was going to use Royal Purple Synchromax what specific type should I order guys?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a good differential oil. I wanted to replace that as well.

I've heard good things about Redline for both gearbox and diff but not sure of the weights...

Redline D6ATF for the trans in most applications. If you live in a hotter climate or track your car Redline D4ATF is recommended.
Redline 75w90 for the diff.

Perfect thanks. I don't plan on tracking my car so they should work well.

On the Redline website it says D6 ATF is for Auto transmissions. Would this still be alright with my 6MT or should I use their 70w80 which is what they recommend:

Hey mate,

I have used Red Line D4 ATF in my gearbox for over a year, it is a definite upgrade over the "Long-Life" factory fill.

Gear selection is noticeably smoother and a quick first to second change is far less notchy.

Given that you have done 50,000 miles on the original gearbox oil, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how much nicer the box feels, following the oil change.

+1 redline makes good fluid. D4 ATF I've used and it feels great.
Do not use synchromax (there's only one type, called synchromax :P)

I just replaced my fluid. If you look under the car, next to the drain plug, it will say exactly what fluid to use. Mine said MTF-LT3 (manual transmission fluid - life time 3). Notice how it does not say ATF... therefore I would not use automatic transmission fluid.

I would only get oem oil for the transmission. I've heard too many stories of people using the the wrong fluid and having problems. It cost $57 for two liters from my local dealer. -thats maybe $20 more than royal purple or redline.... big deal.

I hear you, I don't have a problem spending the extra money I just want to go with the best stuff that's why I am asking you guys what you would recommend. I don't plan on tracking the car and living in Canada so there are never really any crazy hot days up here.
