Question for the 335 guys (n gals)

As alot of you know I was looking into a 335i sedan for a while, but ended up with an 07 g35S. I Have no regrets as I love everything about the car. Looks and power are great as well as handeling. If the lease on the 335 coupe wasnt so insane, i cant say i would have picked the g35 though.

I never realized that you guys have so much torque @ such a low rpm. Thats something that the G definatly lacks. It does have ample torque at lower rpms but def not like your cars. With my 20's on especially and the ac running on a hot day, i find myself having to sometimes downshit when id rather not. My question is with the 335's if your crusing along at 60 mph in sixth gear, can you basicly pull off passing someone while leaving it in 6? I know sixth probably doesnt make sense because its more of a cruising gear, so if not 6th lets go with 5th gear. I can pass decently in 5th at 50 mph but it def doesnt have alot of umph at that speed. With the torque available at such a low rpm in the 335i, do you really barly ever have to downshift?

honestly... no

i find my self cruising about 65-70 in sixth gear all the time, and when i gotta pull ahead an pass someone, i just lightly throttle it and before you know it, your way ahead without any effort....i can just imagine how it will be when I get my Procede!

6th = 4th

Logik,

I haven't had to downshift once in this car, 6th gear is a bit iffy at 60mph for good pull, but generally the car has a great amount of power in all gears because of how the turbos are set in the engine to provide great power at lower RPMs. It's got a lot of umph, as you called it. Those G35s are really nice, hope you're not having buyer's remorse...I've driven some of those, they're awesome cars.

No, because the next thing you realize is the cop pulling you over for going over 80mph.

yap, this 335 pulls in 6th, i was actually very surprised... in my old e46 330ci I had to downshift from 5th to 4th to pass someone on a highway, with my 335 I can do it in 6th pretty easy.... procede must be really insane

I just got back from my Euro Delivery trip. I never had to downshift to pass. Plenty of passing power in 6th. Pretty amazing really when your rpms are so low to have so much torque from that gear. You literrally just have to goose the throttle and you get a quick burst.

Honestly, I downshift out of habit. Coming for torqueless hondas, I forget that I don't have to. You have a lot of oh s**t moments when you realize you shouldnt and if any cop saw you right now you'd be in his back seat like a teenage girl on prom night.

nope. I let a friend drive my car yesterday and he was amazed at how hard it pulled even in 6th.

nah im really not...i truely love the car, especially the technolgy that it has in it...the BOSE Sow system with the HD is a great feature.

But hearing everyones comments, me being a speed freak, and what the procede can do to your cars its the one thing I have to say that I dislike about my car. My cars a lease so ill never go to crazy with mods...I have an intake just for the sound lol. Either way I said it when i picked this up, my lease is only 24 months, so hopefully when my lease is up,the coupes leases wont be so insane like they were and the 335i will almost 100% be my next car. Especially if the hardtop convertable lease becomes normal. Another plus side is hopefully the fuel pump issues will be fixed by then.

I almost did have a 335i sedan but there wasnt that much interior room for me (for a sedan).

Either way enjoy ya cars, you all have a serious machine....bmw really did it with that TT setup.

Another thing too...

Nissan/Infinitis VQ engines were ahead of their time. But I think that the VQs success has hurt Nissan actually. They rested on their laurels.

Today, the VQs are starting to reach their dynamic limits in terms of torque, fuel economy, and NVH levels . And, the industry has moved towards max torque delivery right off idle. Even in small capacity engines (VWs 2.0L comes to mind).

Infinti has tried to brand their way around this torque deficit with the G35s "Acceleration Swell" sales pitch...which is a highbrowed way to say: this engine delivers the goods at high RPMs. Or when it's on cam.

The G is a great car, but I think the powertrain is a half generation behind the curve, and by mid product cycle, it will be left for dead. The G35 will eventually get the G37s engine, but other car makers are moving onward and upwards...

...Which is going to mean that Nissans powertrain engineers will have to do something amazing soon AND do it for well below the GTRs pricepoint.

Cheers

When I drive the wife's 335i Coupe on the weekends (with her next to me), I can pass in 6th without downshifting - even going uphill. This "high torque across a 3,500 RPM range" capability is a fascinating feature of the 335i - and outdoes my M Roadster, which I most definitely have to downshift to get the same results.

my cuzin who was driving was going around a car and was so amazed at the torque that he would usually push the throttle a lil more to get that auto tranny downshift he found he didnt even needed it and he was doing a good 70+ once he was done passing...

i mean thing about it, your crusing at 60mph and at about around 2k rpm, you got full 300 ft lb active at that time. btw knowing the engine is underrated, more like 340 ft lb. at the crank at 1,500rpm and something like 330 hp at the crank..

check out youtube, there some six gear runs from like 50 mph all the way to 140mph like butter. im at work now and cant access video for some wierd reason.

hey if ur around brooklyn this upcoming friday or saturday ill be around floyd bennet field.
thats what made me ask the question...figuring if your at 60 mph your rpms are about 2k...and your torque is available at 1400 rpm so it just seemed like it made sense. Dont get me wrong the G35 is no slouch...in fact tonight being the weather was alot cooler 77 up in ny with no humidity ( + no blasting ac) the car actually felt phenominal. I actually call pull off decent highway passes at 60 mph in 6th gear...but 5th is much better suited for this, the car has enough power not to need 4th which i do like.

I live in brooklyn, and fridays happen to be my off day, maybe well meet up. pm me when you know around what time youll be over there.

I agree, the GTR will be a spectacular halo car for Nissan, but I'm talking about the engineers doing something special in their more mass market VQ series vehicles...350z, G35/37, M35, etc.

If Nissan can't produce a sensational engine/drivetrain to replace the VQ and do it for less than 70K, then they'll be left behind. Hopefully the attention and technology put into the GTR will trickle down.

+1. i had an '02 maxima, which was the first year for the vq35 in that car. Very flexible engine, but not nearly as smooth as the vq30, and nowhere near as smooth as the N52 at higher revs. Does anyone make a smooth higher reving larger (>3.5) V6?
