OS Giken LSD Differential Oil options

I've been running the 80-250 OS Giken brand diff oil since I got the diff in my car. I have about 900 miles on it and am due for a change. I've been reading some people run 75/140 Syn GL5 oil. I don't track my car, other than the occasional drag race. 99.5% of the time I'm driving spirited around town. Not to mention I am running the Finned aluminum VAC Cover which helps keep the oil cool and increased the capacity I believe. I really would like to run a medium thickness oil; 75-140. Question is what kind should I be running. Do I need the slip additives or just pure 75-140? Anyone have experiences trying different oils in their OSG?

I don't have any experience with the OS diff, but Motul 75W140 Gear Competition or BMW Castrol XJ from the dealer would be my choices. The Motul is about half the price of the XJ. No need for additional limited slip additive unless your diff groans in tight turns.

Off topic question

Did it make a difference/better in launching at the track?

I'm getting high 1.8 to 2.0 60ft times on 19" street tires w/auto...... I think that's pretty good

People are saying this is the best mod other than a tune...... Do u agree?
Ty,

Havne't tracked my car yet. But man it's nice driving a 2 wheel drive RWD car again. 335i should of come with a LSD. I love the VAC diff cover. Can't believe I was on the fence about it.... so glad I did it while I was there. I even sent a plug to Gold Plug and had them make me a magnetic drain plug for the VAC cover. Can't run a diff w/out a magnet... hell I run magnets in everything. Best thing you can do.

I called OSG today. They pretty much said the thinner the fluid the more noise and the quicker it will lock. Too much fricion modifier and you won't get proper lockup. So it's a crap shoot. I'm going to try some Mobil 1 75-140, which has some friction modifier in it. Can't buy it w/out it. I have 2 cans of the OSG stuff still on the shelf, but I really want to see how it sounds and works with medium grade oil. 75/90 is out of the question for a performance diff like this and power. So it's either a 75/140 or the OSG lube. So why not try it out and report back.

There is a Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75-140 which I am running, which (probably) has every additive a clutch-style LSD needs. But Drexler recommended me this and I am not switching it.

However, I would highly recommend sticking to the manufacturer-recommended oil (OS Giken). Your diff was designed and tested with that oil and those additives, you can't beat that. I read of many cases when using a different oil caused noises, thumps and other problems in LSD operation.

^ that is true.... Maybe I'll just call it a day and run the OSG oil I have and not spend $20/Liter on Mobil 1 stuff just for an experiment.

Changed it yesterday. Drove the car around for a few miles then drained it for about an hour. Had 860 miles on it since the diff went in. Fluid coming out was pretty nasty. Filled it back up with OSG fluid. Drove it around, smooth and quieter. Should be good for 30k.

I'm no expert but a while back (in my old E34) - everywhere on the forums people were swearing by redline transmission and diff fluid. It's not cheap either.

You might want to look into it.
