First check engine light

Recently purchased an 08 335XI, cars been great. I made a WOT pull on to the freeway the other day, car pulled great I let off and got a check engine light "reduced power" yada yada. I pulled off shut the car down started it back up no light ran fine. I have the cheapo bluetooth ELM327 OBD2 reader, I connected it up and it has no stored codes or historic faults? So my question is what gives? Clearly this would have been a stored fault, is my cheapo OBD2 reader not going to work with this car?

With the Car running pull the code, My guess is Low boost, either hole in induction system or turbos failing. or could be the boost pressure converter.

No luck, perhaps I need to look for a cheap hand held scanner. I can read other parameters like rpm, boost, mph ect... but nothing for codes.

You put the car in "Limp mode", doesn't necessarily mean there will be a code believe it or not. Most likely your VANOS solenoids need to be cleaned. VERY common, do a search and you'll find at least 10 threads.

Also, what are you using the "Torque" app? From what I've found it doesn't read "pending" codes on our bimmers.

Joe:

What the h is a boost pressure converter?

And if it was a hole in the system or failing turbos it would've happened again right away... Not sure where you got all that from...

He is saying it happens on WOT, it could be a pin hole in the system which would mean more pressure = more likely to go into limp mode. Really without the codes it's hard to pin point what it's related to.

Also Boost Pressure Converter, you have two of them on an N54 engine. So I am not sure what is so funny. They also affect the induction system and can cause Low Boost codes. Most of the time a Code is thrown on WOT is Low boost.

My code was always thrown on WOT and Randomly during city driving. And was getting worse over time (left it for a year).
Simple restart of the engine would get rid of the code. Can also be boost lines which would go back to hole in the system.

Go WOT and see if the car goes into Limp again.
