Twin Turbo and Tailpipes
So, I was out driving yesterday and noticed a new 535xi pass me by and noticed how the tailpipes on the 5 series twin turbo version has the tailpipes all to one side. It kind of threw me as I have come to know the twin turbo by its two sided tailpipe treatment. Any thoughts on why BMW moved the pipes together on the 5? I doesn't look as sporty in my opinion. Does the V8 5-series split the pipes and that is a reason for visual distinctiveness?

I think that they are doing it to make it look less sporty
My guess is that if it looks too 'sporty', it will compete with the 550i too much. Similarly, they used the same pipe formation on the 135i. |

I read somewhere that the 5 series was the "classy" sports sedan in the lineup. They wanted to keep it subdued in the looks dept but still provide the grunt. A lot of their demographics dont want the look-at-me styling cues that the 335 has. Apparently thats why they do the dual design for the M cars. Its distinctive to those that want it to be look-at-me.

No, the V8 5-series doesn't "split" the tailpipes either, nor does the 135i (already mentioned above). It's not like the N54 requires it. It's purely a cosmetic thing, whether it's all to one side or one on both sides.
FWIW, I think it looks better, more balanced, with one pipe on both sides, like the 335i. Our old Accord was like that, too. A huge number of cars have that same styling these days.

I personally like the split tail pipes.

There would be a gas tank weight on that empty side, and your driver weight on the other to balance out...

I believe the split dual tailpipe of the 335i makes for a less restrictive exhaust than the exhaust setup of the 535i and 135i.

I believe engine power is rated with the exhaust system in place so if the 335i were less restrictive, the 335i would have higher hp rating than the others.

+1.
I was just curious if there is a design or engineering reason or some other opinions about it. Personally I think they did it to look less racer on the 5 series but that doesn't explain why they did it on the 135i. Hmmm...Oh well, it's still a great engine regardless of tailpipe placement.

Hmm... I don't see how it would work much better, it still has a dual exhaust that is being routed into a single muffler. Its not like an s2k or where a single exhaust is being branched off into two mufflers in stock form so when you convert to a single exhaust you see some significant gains.

Werd, maybe ur right on this stock system...i stand corrected I was thinking more of a single larger turbo set up into a straight 3" exhaust...

Funny thing... I was driving past a 335xi the other day and I noticed the same thing. At first I thought it was a re-badge, but maybe it has something to do with the AWD? Any thoughts?
Edit: Just answered my own question. It was a re-badge I saw. I was just looking at some pics from a local meet and someone snapped the back of a 335xi and it had split tailpipes. For my 2cents, I like having the split tailpipes on my 335i. |

You must come from the JDM scene also... everytime I think of a turbo car I think of a 3" single exhaust.

Any pictures of the underside for the 535i?
We can quickly tell if it's cosmetic or functional decision.
