Over 3k rpm during break-in
I went for a drive today and went to about 4.5k rpm a few times during my launch from green light. Do you think this is really bad for the car? I only have about 300 kms on it. Also, aside from the weird whistling noise I have been experiencing with, I started to hear another noise coming from the breaks. It's even more of a squeaking noise than the metal sound from the engine. What do you think the cause is?

When my car had 29 miles on it, i took it to 6800...
Hard break-in method is the way to go... if you drive like a pansy, your car will perform like a pansy later on... so to answer ur question, yes it is okay to take it up to 4500...that's really nothing

BMW takes your engine block, assembles it in the factory, mounts it to a jig, attaches hoses supplying special lubricants to it, attaches electrical power and fuel supplies ... and runs the living crap out of it. If it doesn't work perfectly, it gets melted down in shame.
The reason you shouldn't overdo it on a brand new car is because the brakes, tires, etc. are not ready to rock and roll. You could get into trouble. I wouldn't sweat it. The "Hard Break In" is a joke. The engine was broken in at the factory. |

Plenty of people here have gone to the local drag strip before their break in was over. Even more people have installed procedes before the recommended 1xxxmiles for break in. You have nothing to worry about. |

3000 mls! You are ready to rumble!!! :rocks: Extend your right foot why dontcha!
And, as far as break in goes...does BMW want you to come get it there (ED Program) so you can drive is slowly through the moutains and hills of Europe?! Unmöglich!!! In a another month or so, change your oil and you will be fine. The brakes, they hiss at low speed...all of ours do...and you will let down the rear windows thinking they are the fronts...and then you'll hear how loud the engine/AC fan is on a hot day...yada yada... Enjoy your car. DM |

+1, yeah 3K is pretty low.. Don't worry about the whole 4.5K RPM thing. It seems more like a myth. A lot of other people claim the complete opposite. I know two things. 1. It won't void the warranty. 2. It won't break the car.. as I did it many times and have no problems. Though I too was shy about it at first. But trying to do something like that(keeping it under 4.5KRMP/100mph) on the autobahn is nearly impossible. I had little cars I.E. ford fiestas flashing me to get the hell out of their way

I wasn't too worried about it. Listen to Spool. Btw, that was on the Autobahn.

OMG, do you plan to keep the car until it has 300K miles on it? Most people don't, in fact most people lease these cars and don't keep them past 30K miles.
I just PDI'ed my own car yesterday, and ran it to redline at WOT through the first 3 gears with 3 miles on it. Break-in is one of the most controversial subjects around engines. I've read some very very convincing information about a hard break in and how it positively effects ring seal. I have a few friends that race micro midgets with 600cc sport bike engines in them. I've seen them take a brand new R6 engine out of a bike, beat the hell out of it for a season, then show me the dyno graph where it makes 15% more power than the exact same engine that was broken in easy in a bike with 1500 miles on it. That was enough proof for me!!

Rev away.
I started off trying to do the right thing, but it is like being in a room of naked hotties rubbing themselves all over you and being told not to be a "bad boy" you just can't help having the odd moment or two where you rev the shit out of it just to hear that wonderful engine sound, and feel that shove in the back as the car launches at the horizon... I think the trick is to just be sensible about it, and not constantly thrash it early on. I didn't hold back, but didn't get up it for the rent all the time either. My car hasn't suffered at all, and the engine continued to loosen well past 20,000km on the odo and keeps getting better and better. There are many threads on run-in issues and philosophies. Everyone has a different opinion, but at the end of the day, you have to do what feels right to you.

I picked my car up from the dealer, drove directly the A6 (autobahn) and went up to 120mph, I couldn't resist. Honestly, do whatever you want. I flogged my old STi from day one and it ran like a champ, I can't imagine a BMW would react any differently.

With all due respect, you guys are only reading half of BMW’s guidance.
Note the instruction to avoid full throttle. High RPMs are not great for an engine with new bearings, but high BMEP and low RPM is much worse. In other words, wide open throttle and low RPM. If these cars had manifold pressure gauges this would get more attention, but since they just have a tach all people talk about is RPM. New engines should be driven gently—moderate PRMs, partial throttle. This not only lets the engine beak in, it also lets the other important parts break in and, perhaps most importantly, gives the car the opportunity to show any defects in a (hopefully) less threatening manner. |
