Considering a 335i

I just drove an AT 07 with about 6k on the clock - it was

I did some quick searching on here.. looks like early models have an issue with lack of an oil cooler. Is BMW installing one under warranty, or are you SOL if you have an early enough model? The AT with paddles is very nice, similar to DSG. Has anyone tracked with this? I am thinking AT for my daily drive, but can definitely kick in with the paddles when needed. I've also considered getting an E46 M3 with SMG, but the cush ride and mod potential (easy and cheap compared to E46) is very enticing.

Thoughts?!? Thanks

I have an early build AT without the oil cooler and no problems even with spirited driving. I haven't tracked the car, but then I do not intend to either. I think you need to press the issue and claim overheating to get an oil cooler installed.

If a comfortable ride is important you might pass on the M3. I had one for 3 years and my wife would complain that it was like riding in a stagecoach. The 335 is a great compromise between comfort and handling.

And why is this 335 sitting at your dealership with 6K on the clock? Oh, and dont forget that it is a '07 model with so many miles already...

The 335i is a nice performance/comfort compromise but do not get one if you plan on driving schools. I had two E46 M3s and sold the last one because it was a little too rough around the edges for my daily commute. What a mistake. I have done driving schools with my E90 335i with the oil cooler and it went into limp mode more than a half dozen times. Excess coolant temp was the culprit. The car is in need of a larger capacity radiator. BMW is aware of the problem but there is no fix for it. There is plenty of discussion on this in the Forced Induction and Tracking forums. If you don't plan on tracking I'd still wait until BMW can get to the bottom of the fuel pump issues. Every day I push the start button I expect it to fail. If you can't wait get the M3 which is much better on track anyway.

hmmm.. need to re-think e46 M3 and now that I'm aware of a 335ix Coupe with AWD.. definitely tempting. This oil issue.. I guess could easily be resolved with an aftermarket cooler?

or maybe hold out for the cheaper Evo X

E46 M3?? I can almost guarantee you're gonna regret it once the new M3 arrives.

My car will eventually be sitting on the lot with 6500 miles on the odo after I lemon it for a failed fuel pump/out of service 57 days.

I am considering ordering an 08 and doing ED with Irv out of Motorwerks here. I just drove an 07 Vette.. it was nice, but can you believe that I'd rather drive the 335i?!?! the vette is like a sledgehammer - my 911 is like a surgerical tool. The 335i is in the middle (faster 0-60 than my 911, tad slower than the vette) and is just such a "luxurious" car compared to both my 911 and the vette as far as ride qualit and interior, and those turbos!

I am really considering the ED now, its just for that kind of money, I could get a really swell/great looking "sports car" a/k/a vette, elise, etc., - but man, everything comes back to the 335i!

Now I just need to get more info on the active steering and sports package. I've searched and only a few guys who track ( who responded) talked about AS being bad, so I may skip on the AS. As for the sports package, sounds like its just the seats and rims - no change in the suspension setup/springs/shocks, etc? Maybe Ill pass on that since Iwill most likely get another set of rims.

Gosh BMW... you are really impressing me!

I love my 335 but I'd rather drive my Vette There is a lure of torque that can't be beat.

I put more miles on the 335 though since the backseat in the Corvette is really uncomfortable

Now that the 08 vette will have 430-436hp, I am a little unsure of what I want. ugh!

Do I get the vette and pick up something for a daily driver ( read: 5 year old Japanese econo sedan) or go with the 335i for all the time. Vette is a looker, not that the 335i isnt, but you guys know what I mean. Damn.. life decisions.. tough!!!

I absolutely love my Vette, but if the choice was one car -- the 335 -- that I could drive every day, or the Vette and being forced to drive a crappy car every day, then I'd choose the 335.

If it was practical to commute in the Vette (meaning don't need 3+ seats, since it is a great commute car), I'd get the Vette.

Tough decision.

BTW, I'd consider a great deal on an 07. 36hp is nice, but 400 is pretty darn good

Thanks for the additional replies, guys.

I can get a brand new 07 vette for about $41K. Not bad... not bad at all. I will be talking with Irv tomorrow, and its just.. I dunno, spending about $45K or more on the 335i will be a hoot to drive everyday, but then it leaves you thinking about something like the vette, or a used porsche, elise, etc. I guess I really just need to decide whats more important to me.

HAHA, Purplewidow, I'm definitely considering it!!

yes indeed, wouldn't the 08's have this corrected or is BMW just letting everything go out the door with bad shit on it? haha

I'm going to call up the Corvette dealer to get pricing on the 08. 436hp, better/smoother shifter - the 07s are pretty nice as it is, so... hmmm.

Wives can sure complain a lot. I bought a stagecoach and at first my wife thought it was romantic like being in a Spaghetti Western. Wasn't long before she started complaining about the lack of a/c and how long it took to get from NYC to Boston. The relatives also said our setup was too smelly to park in their upscale neighborhood.

Go to the Corvette Forum and check out the sponsor dealers. At least $8K off MSRP for a remaining 07
