Mine blew apart around 40k, had complete failure while downshifting to make a turn. BMW Rox quoted me 1800$ to replace, but when I told them id have it towed to Thompson in PA, they agreed to cover the cost of the replacement.

Got my clutch replaced under the BMW extended maintenance program at 90,000 miles. I suspect it is covered under the standard 50,000 mile warranty and maintenence.

Oh I rered your first post. I thought you just meant the cost of labor. Parts were covered as well?

Sorry I was a little vague in my post. The entire thing was covered. I had had the car for about a month and a half when the clutch went. I was in NJ when it happened so I had it towed to the nearest dealer. The dealer I bought it from in PA wanted to look at it once I told them BMW Roxbury wanted to charge me 1800 for parts and labor. Thompson BMW offered to tow it to PA to look at the damage. Once I told Rox that, they changed their mind and covered the work and overnighting a new clutch assembly. The car felt brand new after and didn't cost me anything.

I respect the hell out of my car, and know that the car had a failure to defect or the previous owner being less than nice to his car in his last few weeks with it.

Thanks for the clarification. Can I ask w many miles you had on it before it went?

I got it as a CPO from a single owner in the low 30,000's. I put about 4-6k miles on it before it started slipping in 6th, then finally went. (I commute to work and put about 800 to 1000 miles a week on the car so it was pretty quick)

I learned to drive stick on an e46 m3, and have been successfully driving manual transmissions for 5 years. The BMW dealer looked at me as a guy in his mid 20's and immediately thought I didn't know how to drive the car, or I was doing burnouts with it.

I had to explain that a 328 xi isn't a race car, its a daily driver with a little spirit of awd fun sprinkled in. I think after that they understood I wasn't responsible for the clutch blowing apart.

2008 BMW 328xi  [0.00]
I recently got a 328xi CPO as well. I love the way the car drives but the shifts are not smooth no matter what I do. There is a strange jump every time from 1-2, and 2-3.

I grew up driving standard transmissions of all sorts; Saab, VW, Subaru, and I have never felt a car that has a worse feeling clutch engagement then my 3 series. I was to the point where i thought I was juts a bad driver....When i finally stumbled across a forum post that talked about the CDV (clutch delay valve)...If you remove this restricting valve, or replace it with a modified version your car will shift like a normal vehicle.

The best thing about this CDV is that it prematurely wears your clutch out, in an attempt to save your transmission from Morons that cant drive a stick. SO if your wondering why your clutch is wearing out so fast, Its because BMW doesn't think you know how to drive your car, and this is probably why they will fully cover the cost of a clutch replacement.

If your vehicle is a CPO, BMW replaces the clutch as a 1-time courtesy...

BMW changed their policy, it used to be that they cover one clutch replacement and now they only cover the clutch under maintainence if the disc is under 1 mm of thickness from the rivets. So dealers are not taking chances so you have to pre-approve a clutch replacement at your cost and if it's under 1mm they will cover it under warranty.
