HPFP dead (post march production)
Let me first start off by saying I yes, this is another 'my HPFP is broken' thread, but I believe this sites purpose is to give owners a voice - so in my opinion there are no "stupid posts".
Now, the reason I am posting is because I have an APR 07 production 335i and while the fuel pump has not yet completely failed, it has been long cranking for the past 2000 miles (3000 on the odo now). As of now it is sitting in the shop waiting for the replacement - they told me I can come pick it up and drive it, but they advised against it since it will only get worse. In the meantime - 328i loaner. There were 3 cars in the past week in for the same issue, and all were post march production. So, to BMWNA's 'post march production cars are fitted with a redesigned HPFP' I say Bulls*&t! In fact, at least at my dealership, it seems all the late production cars exhibit the symptoms earlier (long cranks) but without the rough idle. Dealership told me its going to be a while, not so much due to the backorder, but rather due to shipment method/customs. According to them, sometime they receive HPFP via air shipment, othertimes via boat. A few weeks ago, some poor soul who was waiting had to wait an extra 12 days for it to clear customs. As I already stated, they gave me a 328i loaner, which is ok with me, and already told me that I need to bring them a copy of my most recent statement (its a lease) and that they will write a check for that amount. I did not even buy from this dealership, so I am happy so far. However, you can prepare all you wish for this day (and I did even before I took delivery) and you can rationalize that you knew it would happen; but damn this sucks! |

welcome to the club... i am just hoping that my second pump doesnt die... i was already in the shop almost 8 weeks the first time. Now my car is sitting in the shop waiting for an oil cooler retrofit "authorization" because of overheating and limp mode... obviously its drivable, so I might just go pick it up and come back when they get their shit together. They put me in a new 5 series with only 20 miles on the odo as my loaner (well, now its close to 400 miles)
I want to take my 335 on a long drive down to florida from ohio, but I just dont trust it enough... sad, huh... I'll probably do it anyways |

So BMW is agreeing to pay for everyone's payments while their cars are awaiting new fuel pumps? If thats the case with at least another BMW loaner than I won't complain so much when it happens.

I was ready to buy a 2008 335i coupe. Should I reconsider, get the 328i and chip it? I am use to reliable cars. I am worried and rethinking my decision on the 335i. |

For real. I'm hoping for a fuel pump failure so they will take care of a couple payments, save me some miles, AND give me another BMW to drive. :rocks:

More on my 328i loaner. . .
Montego Blue/Tan, Premium Package and Auto only w/ about 1200 miles on the clock. My thoughts
Acceleration: No comparison, the 328i is a dog compared to the 335i, HOWEVER, its a dog of BMW nature: Its still smooth as silk (actually quite a bit smoother at idle and on acceleration) and it still revs all the way to redline like a kitten! But c'mon who doesnt expect this - NA vs. TT! That said I would still take the 328i engine ANY day over some American POS V6 or V8, I don't care if its slower to 60! Ride: Obviously I am comparing sport to non-sport, so the ride is a tad smoother. However, the RFT tires on the 328i are louder than my 335i's stock sport pkg RFT. The 328 just has more drone to it. This is suprising to me. Also, while bumps are jolting on both, the 328i feels a bit cheaper, say more klunky than solid. Of course, this is a loaner, no telling what a previous loanee did. Transmission: Downshifts suck, no two ways about it, and upshifts are more lethargic. Not a bad transmission for the average daily driver, but the 328 should have the same ZF tranny as the 335 or at least the previous 2006 330 ZF transmission. I know GM invented the auto tranny, but it doesnt belong in a BMW. Color: Montego Blue is a beautiful color, very striking and a nice chage from my Sparkling Graphite. No offense to those of you who have this color, but its a bit feminine for my taste. I am not a fan of the Tan interior, its too 'hot' looking, and by hot I mean I mentally associate the color with hot temperatures. Not sure why, I just do. Overall its still a great car, and I can be cruising at 80+ on the interstate before I know it. So for those of you who bypassed the 335 for the 328, congrats, you have a wonderful car and paid a lot less than I did. I can make a list of gripes just about as long for the 335 - so pay no attention to those idiotic posters who downtalk the 328 in comparison to the 335i. The differences do not need to be justified, the price difference already does that for you. |

My car is an April 2007 build too. I will be taking my car into the dealership tomorrow for the long cranks. I'll probably be waiting for the fuel pump, just like the rest of you. I'll let you guys know what they say tomorrow.
On the bright side, like somebody said. At least I know I will get a Bimmer as a loaner and I can rack up the miles on that car, while I wait for my fuel pump. If it takes longer than a month, I will definitely try and get a credit for the time it was in the shop. Even with the fuel pump issue, I still love my car. lol!

Pringles.
j/k To OP: That totally sucks, I have an April build too and was hoping all that was resolved. Well at least you got a nice bmw loaner, most dealerships give you crap loaners around here in LA. Beverely Hills and Santa Monica don't even have loaners!! Hope your situation is resolved soon but in the meantime drive that puppy like it's stolen. Now I want a loaner too |

I could be wrong of course but they are the same engine and share the same fuel system the only difference is the that the US 328 power output is slightly higher than the european 3.0 litre 325. I believe that the fuel pump part number is also the same. But ISTBC.

No pump problems here YET, I have read in another forum (so take that for what it's worth) that March April production have a mix of the pumps that are going bad and the new production that are suppose to not have the defective component.
The problem with the fuel pump issue is there is so much bad info online that no one can really get a handle on what to expect. I generally support a wait and see approach to problem solving but I am changing my opinion in this situation. I think BMW needs to get a lot more resources in play with this problem or they will get a deserved black eye for the inability to get this corrected in a timely manner.
