TPMS sensors required for winter tires/wheel pkgs?

Does anybody know if you are required to purchase the TPMS sensors when buying an aftermarket winter tire/wheel pkg?

If you don't, I guess there is a light that will flash in the instrument cluster the entire time?? I guess the sensors are like an additional $40 per tire or so.

Yes, without them you will get an error message.

I believe that they are not needed in Canada, as Canadian low tire pressure is not driven by sensors (at least thats what I've been told).

I have heard this about E9x in Canada but have not heard anything regarding F30. Basically, hub rotational speed relative to the other hubs determines if any corner is low on air, rather than physical sensor in wheel/tire. Audi currently uses this sensor for US cars but BMW has stuck with physical sensors.

TPMS is not required, per se, but you will get a TPMS light on if you run wheels without the sensors. This will have no effect on performance or driveability, so long as you can look past the light in the dash
