What's in the rearview mirror housing?

I asked this question earlier, but I think I asked in the wrong way --

I'd like to mount something on my windshield, directly under the rear view mirror. I see that there's a "grille" on the front of the mounting, and I read in the manual that the car senses exterior light through there to control mirror dimming (at least that's how I read it -- I see that there's an electric eye mounted directly into where the rearview attaches to the glass, possibly for the rain sensor, but it sounds like maybe there's also something that wants to peek out from underneath that grille.)

So, if there is something happening under the grille, any idea what's under there? And, any idea how much space I need to leave between that and what I mount? I'd like to keep it as flush as possible, for various reasons.

Thanks...

Tim

Plus power hook up for compass and Homelink in the mirror, and control hook up for dimming and the blinking red LED.

Only caution about mounting anything too close to the mirror is that it may interfer with the compass, if so equiped.

4 Sensors can be around there on the 3 Series

1) Auto dimming mirror light sensor ( on the back of the rearview mirror itself )
2) Rain Sensor ( on the windshield )
3) Auto lights sensor ( on the windshield)
4) High beam assist sensor

^ for this very reason I wouldn't mess with it.. They say in the manual not to place anything behind it.

Hmm.. interesting... I have a toll tag for my local toll roads, i wonder if it is effecting anything? It is right at the base of the mirror where it attaches to the windsheild

I've attached a transponder for the local toll road on the windshield behind the mirror on the drivers side. It's mounted pretty high up so the bottom of the transponder is probably half way up the mirror (I'll try and take a pic tomorrow).

I didn't even think about this stuff when sticking it on, since this thread I've payed more attention to the things mentioned here and all the following still work with no noted change:
Auto windshield wipers
Auto headlights
Auto dimming mirror
Compass
Homelink garage door opener
