For you california guys... Summer tires vs AS tires.

What do you guys normally drive? I live in California, and I probably wont ever take my car to any snowy area. I'm debating on summer tires or AS tires when I have to change my tires some time down the road. I don't drive very aggressively, maybe once or twice just for the hell of it, but I would like a combo of performance and comfort, probably more for performance for peace of mind . But then again, I don't want to change out the tires every single year either. Any thoughts?

I've run summer tires on my Mazda 3 for a few years now (Yokohama S.Drives first, and now Michelin Pilot Sport 2s) and never had any issues in the winter. Considering we just get rain and it doesn't get that cold (at least in norcal), I don't see anything to worry about.

Thanks Praz! So out of curiosity, how many miles did you get out of your tires before you had to switch?

Garage List
Summer of course. Get Michelin Pilot Super Sports if you're interested in quality.

You get a 30,000 mile warranty and the BEST tire on the entire summer market right now.

I have gone through at least 5 sets of the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's, and I must say that they have been phenomenal tires. The amount of grip in the dry from these street tires are amazing. They have also served me well year round and have worked extremely well in the rain also.

+1 on the Pilot Super Sports also. This is a tire that Michelin brought onto the market recently, and I have heard that the tire will handle just as well as the PS2. The 30,000 mile warranty from Michelin is also a big plus. Im pretty sure no other manufacturer offers any type of warranty on their high performance tires.

Thanks guys! Now just to find some decent rims for the car, I was thinking M3 reps, but I gotta keep looking. Any suggestions would be nice.

Well, I was switching tires when I got bored of the ones I had. So got about 18k miles on the Yokohamas before I switched to the PS2s. I've gotten 3 flats on the PS2s over the last year, so can't really comment on tire life with much accuracy on those. But after ~10k miles, they're still at 8/32", which is excellent.

But this is a fwd Mazda 3, not a RWD BMW

I'm going to give the Pirelli P7 summers that came w/ my F30 some time and see how I like 'em. They did well on the autobahn, so not feeling the urge to swap 'em for Bridgestones (they're almost as expensive anyway).

You will find many answers to these and other questions at tirerack.com They have wheel and tire combos with TPMS that come mounted and balanced and ready to roll. The tires all have reviews and comments. Plus if you call they will talk you through making tire choices.

Personally I like Michelin products BUT I would also take a look at the Bridgestone S-04 Pole Position. Also consider the Hankook Evo V12 which is less expensive but works really well.

When going over the tirerack web site, focus on Max Performance Summer tires, not the Extreme Performance tires. The latter category will wear more quickly and ride less comfortably. If you're not really an aggressive driver there is no good reason to buy Extreme Performance tires.

When it comes to tires, there's really a plethora of options - it will come down to budget. That said, Pilot Super Sports have proven very popular since their release. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive; definitely a good option.

Wheel choice is virtually unlimited. What sort of style & price range are you looking for?

After looking through the threads and this one, I'll probably go with the Pilot Super Sports. I was really looking for nice performance, medium cost and longevity of tires... I know, thats alot to ask of tires, but I guess I dont want to be running through tires left and right.

I'm sure you won't be disappointed - they're a popular choice for a reason
