I found the tri turbo 6 cylinder engine

It's in the new m550d. It's a diesel engine. I wonder if the patents on this engine were the origin of the rumor that the new m3 is supposed to have a tri turbo six. Interesting.....

Well that's interesting. This makes me even less enthusiastic for the next M. The other hope I was holding on to is that they'll have a high output inline 6 like in the E46, plus the turbos. I won't be holding my breath on that one though.

Not going to happen because compound turbocharging, which is really common in tractor racing, is pretty much limited to diesel engines.

True. But the possible setup in the M would not be a compound set up. It would be a twin turbo with a 3rd electric turbo to eliminate lag. It would not run off of exhaust. It's all speculation but it is a possibility.

I don't understand why the tri-turbo rumor gets around. It would be unnecessarily complicated for an inline 6. If the electric-driven compressor is to help with low-end torque with a larger turbo taking over at mid-high revs, that sort of makes sense. But not a tri-turbo setup for a gasoline I6... compressor surge is going to ruin the party.

I don't get it either. Two words: Twin scroll.

The rumor started a couple of years ago and was confirmed somewhat when BMW put in for a patent that had a 3 turbo set up with 1 turbo running off of electric.
