The downside of a tune

I've had my tune in my car for about a week now and I've noticed a major downside. My gas mileage has gone way down. I used to get ~29mpg on my commute. Now I'm down around ~23mpg.

It's not the tune. It's the driver. I just can't help gunning the car now through gaps in traffic. So much more fun to drive over stock. Anyone not driving this car with a tune is nuts.

You can add to that the "slippery slope." It goes from "well, I'll just get a tune" to 6 months later your FBO installing a meth kit getting a custom dyno tune lol

But its awesome all along the way

As soon as I read your title I thought the exact same thing you typed! Too much fun to punch it and lose fuel economy. I've been driving around very slowly, accelerating very gently, shifting very low, for the past tank and a half, and I got significantly better mileage (360mi/tank versus 290). But damn, it's hard to stay out of the throttle.

funny thing is i dont have a tune, my car is completely stock and im only getting 12.5 mpg
i had the dealer looked at the car twice they keep saying everything is fine. is that normal?
to be honest i do push the car hard once in a while but averaging 12.5 mpg is a killer and my average speed is 17mph

I would think something must be very wrong here -- do you spend a long time in wall to wall traffic every day??

I personally average 18 - 20mpg, but also have a lead foot and drive more side roads than highway

Shift before turbo spooling point which is normally 3k RPM. You will see improvements.

Just make sure to reset your MPG clock

My MPG hasn't changed too much if I use straight 93 octane and do highway only cruising (I still can average 33.XXmpg @ 75mph indicated driving from Sarasota to/from Tampa) and that includes stuffy traffic and slowing down for slower traffic passing in the left lane.

When you drive normally, there shouldn't be a change in MPG. I've read that some tunes (such as a procede) that can actually advance may increase gas mileage during cruising states.

The computer can be giving you a shit estimate on your mpg. I remember reading somewhere that the "No Turbo" Map on the JB4 gave better gas mileage, but the computer said that the MPGs were worse.

I've always noticed the OBC average mpg reading is always low compared to my own calculations as well. It could be that the OBC doesn't account for the roughly 1 gallon remaining in the tank when it reads "0 miles" til empty.

I usually wait till there's 20-30 miles left till empty before filling up with 5.5 gallons of e85 and 5.5 gallons of 91 and still get 250+ miles till I need to fill up again. And that's with multiple runs over 100+mph. Still a lot better than getting 200 miles out of a full tank of 91 on my old STI.
