Gotta be kidding me!?!?! Turbo problem fixed with pictures attached* Must see*
Well let's start this off with this:
I had first purchased this car maybe 2 months ago and I noticed a half engine light would come on when I full throttled it and I also noticed a wastegate rattle when I started the car. Then eventually I started to get the siren of death on my front turbo. At that time I figured it was going out. If you check back on my history of posts, I talked about the siren of death a lot. I had recently purchased a new oem one from Tischer BMW and it came in and looks amazing. During the replacement of the turbo, I took off the pipe that connects the intake to the front turbo where the front fins are facing towards and out comes a bolt... I had realized what happened and the idiot before that had this must've dropped a bolt down the piping during the installation of these Injen intakes and decided not to take it out. Well now I realized why my turbo was going out. The fins were shredded down to almost nothing. After the replacement of the front turbo, it moves good! And plus side is that the wastegate rattle is no longer there. That was the most annoying thing I have ever heard. Here are the pictures of the new turbo and the old turbo.

Looks like a blender, surprised the screw didn't jam the fins after getting bounced around

Yeah right, I don't need to dish out more money ha At least the turbo was only $633 after core. And that's all I had to pay to replace this since my friend and I did it ourselves

Nice work and that's appalling!
Too late now, but I wouldve said to go ahead and do both turbo's, since you're taking things apart to that degree. It's like back in the day with Honda/acura's: if you're doing the timing belt, do the water pump at the same time since you're already doing all the required labor. Regardless, nice work. |

Have you began to wonder where all those metal shavings went yet? I would change my oil and blow out the intercooler with compressed air and pray nothing made it into the cylinders.

Fortunately the aluminum vanes are very thin and turn to "dust". It has all been sucked into the engine long ago or stuck in the oil film inside the IC and piping. It is a very small quantity of metal when you think of the big picture, and engine damage would be highly unlikely.
I've seen this EXACT same issue. Car was on the One Lap of America several years ago, went to limp mode from a bad HPFP, went to a dealer in Georgia to get new HPFP, tech lost a clip that holds the air filter top on, and searched for an hour for it. Turns out it was IN THE FRONT TURBO. They finished the OLOA week in limp mode. When I got the car back after the OLOA, I pulled the turbo and found the clip wedged in the compressor wheel, locked solid. I took pics, they're back at the shop I think...

Bearings in the turbo go bad and the shaft has so much play in it that the compressor and turbine grind against the housings. Sounds like a death whine from the turbo and doesn't last long before the seals go bad, too, and blow oil into the intake and exhaust.

Does the whine happen during spool up or winding down? Or both? I get a pretty loud "whine" sound after I go WOT, let off and coast back down. The whine only begins when I let off the throttle.
