Buying used 2007 335i

Hi guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've been looking at either getting a used 325i or 335i e92 coupe. Budget around $45k. Would dearly love a 335i, however I think they are still just over my current price range. But atm I think I would rather get a 1-2 year older 335i with slightly higher km's than a 325i.

Couple of questions about the 335i:

1. Would BMW Brisbane replace the HPFP for free it it failed OUTSIDE of the warranty period ? I went there on two separate occasions and got two different answers each time. The guy basically said if it's outside the warranty period it would cost about $600 to fix even though BMW have acknowledged it's a known design issue with the car. Any guys with 335i's getting theirs fixed for free ?

2. What sort of fuel consumption are you guys getting on these cars ? The dealer was telling me it's 8-9l/100km with normal driving and around 12l/100km when thrashing it. If that's correct that's not too bad at all.

3. For you Brisbane guys out there, are Euro-Aus in Capalaba or Prestige & Performance in Coorparoo any good for servicing ?

4. Any must have options the car should have when buying ? I always thought M-sport package came with all 335i's as standard but most of them don't have it ?? Also what about Active Cruise Control ?

5. How much power could a tuned 335i produce (~300 kw ?)

6. How much are you guys paying for insurance ? I'm in my 20's with a perfect driving record, how much would I be paying for insurance for a tuned 335i ?

Sorry for all the questions, I just wanna make sure I know exactly what I'm buying and what I'm getting myself in for

I am getting over 14.100km around town, but under 10 on the freeway.

Not really, you can add later as the more options the more you pay.

You should be able to get to at least 300 kw, depending on tune and other mods.

I am paying about $1200 I think.

300kw is very high, you will need FBO's and methanol to achieve these numbers.

just a tune will get no where near this number

i can't imagine any of the piggyback guys actually having engine dyno's, so it's frustrating they quote flywheel numbers

what are you peaking at now with your methanol pauly?

Tbh I'm more interested in lap times, dyno's are only good for ego's

you can tune this car to be faster than an M3 so long as you also update the intercooler, e85 fueling and/or methanol, piggyback tune, high flo cats or cat delete

you would also want a diff imo

What do you drive at the moment? Most people find a stock 335i fast (~200rwkw give or take). A simple tune will get you maybe 230ish-rwkw and it is more than enough for the sane human. So far my favourite 135i is bmroxm5s, it was 225rwkw with just a procede tune, but it felt a lot stronger than the numbers suggested. On the other hand you can keep modding and after a tune most people go for catless DPs. Another friend of mine just pulled 277.9rwkw in his 135i with just tune/catless DPs.

I've also been in Justin's car (350rwkw) and it definitely felt good, but for a fraction of the modding cost I would be just as happy in a tune only car.

I'm waiting for luster's car to finally work, and then hopefully he will let me drive it again...

Hitting 300 will require FBO + meth as luster has stated and it isn't the easiest thing to do well. So far I am yet to come across anyone who has been disappointed with the N54 and its possibilities so even if you're not making 300rwkw you will still have a cracker of a car fast enough to eat many M3s.

you can see my mods below (see sig), and I am quicker than an E9X M3 to 110km/h.. gives you something of a guide.

(M3 would kill me on a track though)

I'm carless atm, driving my brother's car

But I've never driven anything above 150-160kw so I'm sure I'll be more than happy with the power. What I'm more concerned about is the maintenance costs and the fact that the HPFP could fail at any time because it's going to be out of warranty (although I think this problem is probably not as common as people make it out to be).

Now just to save up that little bit more ...

that will make it expensive, under 30's pay a fair bit more. my excess goes to 5K for anyone under 30 driving.

IIRC, a failing HPFP has symptoms so it isn't really a sudden thing. You won't suddenly get up one morning and not be able to drive it.

Golly.
If the fuel pump fails, replace it? It isn't that expensive, I don't know why people are so concerned about it failing. Your car will literally be off the road for a day or two if your mechanic is competent.

Exactly, or if you're that worried get an extended warranty.

Honestly, I do about 16L/100km. That's inner city driving, and it's virtually always in sports mode. I've had this consumption on 2 different 335s (steptronic and DCT).

M-sport obviously looks better, and having the m-sport steering wheel is a definite plus. However, in your price range, it's unlikely you'll be able to find one. I wouldn't worry about active cruise control, probably on the very bottom of my list of options. That said, I do very little freeway driving.

I pay $1.8k, although my insured value is quite high and I don't have a clean driving history (1 at fault claim). You can pickup for quite a bit cheaper, and obviously you can drill this figure down by increasing the excess.

8-9 l/100km not a farking chance, if your not doing 15 your not trying.

300 at the wheels is FBO and Meth, imho get a tune and feel your way from there, rft's are shit but once you remove them the suspension is tooooo soft. No point of power unless you can hook it up

Brisbane performance & prestige are good. I use them a lot. They do servicing and performance work, including fitments and s/c installs

I'm also a first time poster.. Just managed to score myself a 10/07 White 335i with 51k on the clock for $45k. One owner (80yr old guy) pampered it from new and TBH it looks, feels and drives like a new one. ANYWAY - it was advertised for $49k and talked em down (dealer) to $45k Insurance (though AAMI) is only $875 (I've been with them for a while though).

Hows this though: Owned it for 3 days, drove it to work for the first time today. Went out 3 hours later for a coffee and there's a black scuff right down the drivers door - guessing it was caused by a handbag or something.. Nice. Even went to the effort of parking away from everyone so don't know how the hell they managed it. Buffed out ok!
