Cobb Stage2+FMIC Sport & Custom Tune Dynos

As I hinted a few times, I came down to SoCal COBB today to get some dynos and figure out exactly what I can be putting down with CA 91 gas (aka the really crappy stuff).

First off, the guys at COBB are great. I met with Ronnie, whom I had been emailing back and forth to get this set up. While I waited to get on the dyno, Ronnie and I chatted quite a bit - very friendly atmosphere. Tim was the one who did the tune for me today. He's normally up in Oregon, but I lucked out with him being in town. As a BMW owner, he was also very chatty - he absolutely loved my V2 Performance Wheel.

The dyno/tune itself went great. They did a stock baseline, Stage 2+ Sport OTS run and the custom run, all on 91 pump. The stock map put down 289rwhp and 313rwtq on their Mustang Dyno. The OTS map put down 346rwhp and 407rwtq. I was really surprised by the torque numbers, this was already a lot more delta than my previous tune. Based on the logs, we put together a custom map and came up with my highest numbers: 362rwhp and 428rwtq!

My goal was at least 400rwtq and we shattered it. I was hoping for a little more HP, but I still gained +20 over the OTS, and again - this is 91 octane.

So all in all, very happy. Their OTS maps are nothing to laugh at. In fact, we did two runs within a minute on the OTS and the plot was nearly identical. The extra 20hp and 20tq, along with having an expert go through the logs, made this trip very worthwhile. And of course, here is the graph:

Remember that COBB's dynos are usually heartbreaker dynos. So I wouldn't be too worried about that hp figure.

How does it feel compared to before?

Well it was only a 10 minute drive to the hotel lol. I plan on taking it to the drag strip next weekend to test everything out - tune, LSD, lightweight hood.

To be honest, I still had a weird hiccup while in M mode. I was getting on to the expressway and shifted a little early, around 5500 maybe, to 4th gear, and then it seemed to shift by itself to 5th and really bogged down because the RPMs were so low. I really need to log it and maybe get a recording, because I don't know if it's human error or expected or what (maybe the paddles are shorting and sending two shifts). I think on the street sometimes I let up on the gas without realizing because I get nervous about speeding, and maybe that screws it up. That's why I want to do a safe wide open run and get some actual numbers.

Either way, I don't think I really pushed the full 430 pounds, so I don't have much to say. I'm just happy to have some numbers.

+1 on the heart breaker dyno. Thank you for posting your experience. Can't wait for a pro tuner in Florida. You should go back for a pro tune on race gas or E85.

We actually tried mixing in 100 octane, but I think there was just too much 91 left to make a difference. I thought it would be a 50/50 mix, but I'm thinking there was just too much to mix in that fast. We tried the OTS aggressive map and it did nothing extra and actually didn't run as smoothly. My goal was to get the best out of what I have readily available, and that's what we did. If I had 93, I wouldn't even have to question getting a custom tune.

Nice! About time someone got a protune. Did they say if they had protuned any other 335's?

Tim mentioned it was the first one at that shop, I'm not sure about others.

I'm real close to getting a pro tune but I just have to find a free weekend to do it. Post some feedback after you drive more with it. I want to see if it's worth it.

To me it was worth it since it included a bunch of runs on the dyno at no extra charge, and a +20/20 boost. It's also nice to sit there and focus on the logs in real time instead of doing a run and checking them after.

Absolutely. I don't care for any dyno that doesn't have a baseline, even the meth or huge HP ones. It doesn't matter how much you put down unless you know how much you normally put down. Unfortunately I never got a true stock baseline, as I didn't realize how far I would take this, but it's still incredible to see what the tune can do.

Out of respect, I have asked COBB if I can share the price. I'm pretty sure it was a standard quote, but since it doesn't seem that popular yet, I'm not sure if they are planning on adjusting it.

Well ATP is out if you can find someone, and ATR is coming out "soon" (and not the normal soon, the "definitely pretty soon"). You may also be able to get an "e-tune" where you send in logs, but you'll have to ask COBB if they are doing that for us.

Have any logs of the dyno run, or can you post some WOT logs? I'm particularly interesting in midrange-redline timing as adjusted by cobb between the OTS and protune.
