325i Engine Question
I have a question. This is my first time owning a bimmer and from the first day I got it I heard some rattling noises from the engine. So I took it to the dealer and asked where the rattling was coming from. They told me is the engine sound =S. I was like are you sure? My friend owns an e46 325ci and her car doesnt make any sound. The noise I hear from my engine makes it sound like a Diesel car?.. kinda like it. Does any of you have the same noise? Is it normal engine sound or am I just tripping? I mean It's a luxury car. Lexus and every other luxury car doesnt make any engine sound it seems like its off?

No rattling sound from my car from day one and thee shouldnt be one from your car either, 325 or any other. have the service manager check it out.

Go back to the dealer or sevice centre , ask them to compare the engine sound side by side with another E90.

So the car shouldn't have any sound at all? It should just sound like a lexus? quiet? I mean... I could barely hear the noise next to the car... but if i pop the hood it seems like my car is a diesel?

............................................. Yes I agree with your dealer, that sound is normal, mine sounds like a diesel with the hood up too. Wanna hear my 03 VW GTI 1.8T with the hood up? It sounds like a diesel toy car. |

Maybe they accidentally put a diesel in. I don't think I've run mine with the hood open (wonder why not), so I can't really comment. But it is normal for a lot of engines to make that type of sound, especially when started cold. What you are probably hearing is the valves working. If you're concerned then it would be smart to take the previous advice and listen to another E90 just to know for sure.
My 2000 VW Jetta TDI made that same noise! Oh wait, it was a diesel... nevermind.

Cars do make "louder" noises with the hood open. My diesel doesn't sound half bad...but when I open the hood it sounds like a diesel...
My e46 325i also made more noise when I opened up the bonnet (hood) |

I never bothered to listen closely with my last E46 325i loaner so I can't comment on that. |

I just shot a video of the loaner at idle, fully warmed up. My car sounds exactly the same. It's 18mb so it might take a bit to load.
