Question Rattling coming from exhaustm

I know this has been discussed in great detail but I can't seem to peg what is going on with this rattling sound that seems to be coming from my exhaust at the rear of the car. I have a 2008 335i sedan with 65K miles. If I am in neutral and hit the accelerator there is a rattling sound that I am certain is coming from the rear of the car around the exhaust. It also happens when I downshift and the rpm's rise. Wastegate rattle? Muffler? I have a stage 1 tune and there is no lack of power and my performance is not affected at all....just that annoying rattling sound...any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a wastegate rattle to me.

Just to check to see if it is something minor (the exhaust flapper), with your engine off, follow this tutorial:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80661

Then start it up, revv it (when your engine is warm of course) and see if it still rattles. If it does, you probably have a wastegate rattle. If it dousn't, then just leave it unplugged, you will have a slightly louder exhaust.

older 335i versions don't seem to have this connecting rod for the rear mufflers. Not sure if this is a coupe thing or an LCI thing, but it's something that I've noticed when looking at the exhausts.

It's the westgate rattle. Under the Class action lawsuit with BMW, they will fix it for free up to I believe 70k miles. Take it in ASAP, and get it fixed! This is a common problem on 07 and 08 build N54 engines. In the 09 and later models they put in larger westgates to fix this problem.

Is there a reference to refer to the bmw dealership? Because I took my 08 335i in 3 times for a rattle, but they kept checking the exhaust and have fixed nothing and said the rattle noise is "normal". If I went in for a "wastegate rattle" under cpo warrenty, will it show this lawsuit on their computer and check it and replace the wastegates?

Your rattle is probably the flap that closes the exhaust at start up when to heat up the cats faster. That's a normal rattle.

Got it. I have CPO warranty to 100,000 miles so if I do go I'll just have to pay the $50 right? Will wastegate rattle damage my turbos in any way or is it only annoying to the ears? Either way I will have to get with my buddy that loaded my tune with his laptop and flash it back to stock before I go to dealer. I just don't have a lot of free time in the near future...but if it is something that can cause damage I will make time.

I would do it as soon as possible. I'm not 100% sure, but bad westgates probably affect performance.
