Even more claying advice

I am claying my car for the first time, but I don't have any experience with wax. Do I need to wax after using the clay?

Of course. The clay just removes the particles that have adhered to the paint.

Its pretty much the best time to wax. You have a great crap-free surface. Once you get that base wax coat down, washing and waxing in the future will be so much easier.

Here's a helpful link on understanding the claying process and step-by-step instructions on how to clay.

Let us know how you make out.

Dshak,

You don't have to wax your car after claying it. Claying it helps to pick up the crap that has stuck to the car and wont come off with hand wash alone. After claying is a great time to wax the car, but you can wash and clay without waxing if you chose.

Good luck!

I would personally wax after clay. The optimal surface for waxing is after claying. Claying removes any existing wax after your car, wax would be a good layer of protection post claying.

Thanks for the input everyone. I had a bird crap silhouette and I read that the clay might take it off. On saturday I did a wash, dried with an absorber and a mf towel, and clayed it using quick detailer as a lubricant as instructed by the manual on the board. I only clayed the hood. It took a while but the bird crap is gone and the hood feels like glass. The car is only a month and a half old so I wasn't sure if rewaxing was necessary. Sure enough late saturday I was parked outside of a friends house and his sprinklers sent all my hard work down the drain. At least it gives me another chance for some after-wash satisfaction.

Rewax as the clay will remove the existing wax. For a full detail I usually wash, clay, polish, paint cleaner, then wax or sealant. But last week I just clayed the horizontal surfaces and waxed with Poorboys Natty Paste wax. I couldn't wax the aero kit parts as they were just put on and the paint is still curing.

I think i am going to re-clay my car this weekend. I was out of town for a month and a lot of dust and stuff settled onto my car while I was gone. There is also a ghost of a bird crap stain on my trunk. I've only been in the self-detailing game for a few months but from everything I've read, it really is best to wax/seal after you clay. I usually chemically clean the car and reapply the acryllic jet to the car after claying. Just my two cents...
