N54tuning.com sells the plugs and socket required to change them.
Here's a DIY to help you out: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=602804 |

Try NGK plugs too...they run colder than stock and from my understanding that's always a good thing for turbo cars

Splurge for the OE spark plugs from a BMW dealership, they’re the best plugs for our cars. The OE plugs don't seem to cause rough idling like the Bosch OEM plugs.
A special 12-point thin walled spark plug socket is essential for changing the plugs on an N54 engine. Don’t even think about doing the job without one. Using a rubber hose is a good technique to prevent cross threading the steel spark plug threads into the engine's aluminum cylinder head threads. Unlike a socket, the rubber hose technique prevents a mechanic from applying sufficient torque to damage the cylinder head threads if the spark plug threads aren't lined up correctly. I’m happy with these special tools that I purchased from Turner Motorsports: TMS P/N 83300495560, N52/N54 Spark Plug Socket for 2006+ BMW 6 Cylinder Engines, 1 @ $52.95 each (made in Germany). TMS P/N 83300496065, N52/N54 Spark Plug Install Tool, 1 @ $17.95 each (made in France).

Bosch lists ZGR6STE2 as a plug for the N54. (I got a set of these and then a set of OEM ones when I purchased the performance power kit. They look exactly the same except for some "wording" on the ceramic insulator. I've posted pictures of the two in the past...) I use shopzilla.com, bizrate.com, nextag.com, and pricegrabber.com to search whenever I'm looking for something. Lots of hits come up and they rate the sellers...

Factory / OE plugs and get the damn tool. Job can't be done without it. I recently purchased stuff from ECS Tuning and was very happy with my experience as a customer there.

Are colder plugs better for this engine? Or are the oem cold plugs?

I used the Bosch aftermarket ones and an old tool with no magnet from BMS. I used a pen magnet to pull them out. Works just fine.

question
Would have been a waste to replace theses plugs right?
Also the top white ceramic part looked fine / completely white.. Last edited by WickedB; 08-20-2012 at 09:35 PM.. |

Another thing to look at is the gap. Functionally the spark could be fine. But over time the prongs will erode due to use which widens the gap. The DME can only compensate so much before you will start to get misfires.

So I'm at 54k miles now and I'm about to change my plugs soon. I will be getting 6 BOSCH plugs and either the BMS or Schwaben socket tool. What else would I need? I read about people talking about some extension?
