Synchros
Are the synchros really good for 2-1 gear shifts? I mean, usually the 2>1 downshift is frowned upon, but how good are the 335i synchros...Would it be better to dbl-clutch downshift to 1st?
This is IF I need to shift down to 2nd...so don't tell me not to roflmao. |

I don't know why people even think about double clutching.
Just rev match and change gears. I do it often when slowing down. I don't always engage the gears, but I do like to move the lever into successively lower gears while decelerating. |

Alright, that makes sense, but I'm talking 2nd to 1st...I rev-match w/ all my downshifts (except w/ brake) but would like to know if there's a smarter method for 2>1 downshifts.

Learn how to heel and toe so you can decelerate and clutch at the same time while bringing up the revs.

Roflmao...That's not what I'm talking about here...I just want to know if the synchros btw 1/2 are good enough that downshifting from 2>1 is OK.

Why would you be downshifting to 1st anyway in a fashion where you have to worry about synchros being good enough? Unless leaving from a stop, theres never really a reason to go back into 1st.

So if faced with a situation where I have to go realy slow and shouldn't stop, i can't stop and then shift to 1st, I have to downshift to 1st from 2nd.. And unlike you, (I think you have procede?) the torque is not enough to keep me going at a very slow speed on 2nd... That's why. |

I know how you feel, Im in traffic both ways of my commute. I try to leave it in 2nd as much as possible and just roll, even to the point where it might stall, then I clutch it. I hate doing the 1st>2nd shift if I dont have to.

Alright, so at those low speeds, shifting to 1st is ok...goody. Oh and 1st to 2nd shift can be very smooth but it's really tricky..I haven't got to the point where it's smooth all the time. That's what thems longer gear ratios do to ya. Thanks. |

If you havent done the CDV mod yet, that will help out the slow shifts greatly.

Or you could just leave it in first in stop and go. Just don't upshift. Then you get to listen to the beauty of an inline 6 growling at all the other motorists.

1- No one I know can do it, including myself 2- I just recently started manual, and am good, but I hear CDV is more for the experts...or wanna-bes 3- My mother also drives the car, and she's been driving manuals, but still not at a level where she knows everything that's happening. And @ Nyulak, yes...that would be good for me, but bad for passenger that know nothing about cars and GAS! |
