BMW PE DIY posted

Fed up the last few days. Need to vent. Feel free to post "Cool story bro" pics.

Went to a few shops to install my Performance Exhaust. First shop wanted $125 which I felt was high for only cutting 2 pipes and mounting an OEM exhaust with OEM hangers but WTH. Was just about to say yes when he said I had to come back in 2 days. Too busy? I only saw one other car there but he made it sound like my car would be a long & difficult install. When I asked if he could just make the cuts and I would do the install, he gave me a 30 second explanation of how it's difficult to align an OEM exhaust. I zoned out 3 seconds in.

Second shop said $80. Okay, but then he backed out stating my car was too low and he wasn't sure he could get it onto the ramps. I pointed out boards they had that were clearly used for this occasion. He didn't seem interested. Maybe too much risk?

Third shop tech just shrugged his shoulders and asked if I could come back when his manager was in.

WTH?! BMW tax and/or scared techs? I don't get it. So, did it myself. For those of you that want images, made a quick little DIY. Oh and I should mention it's not Rocket Surgery or Brain Science either.

Hows the sound?
How much louder than stock?
Please give me a detailed review on the sound and its loudness if you can.
Thanks

I'm not the best at describing sounds and have yet to take a sound clip. I can give you my initial impressions though.

Let me first say I came from a custom Magnaflow system then went back to stock and then to the PE.

The PE is the loudest of the bunch. It is also the raciest. It burbles and pops on decel. At cruising speed or when lightly pressing the throttle, there's no drama whatsoever. However, give it 30%+ and it'll start getting loud. Lay into it and it'll turn heads. It's quite nice and from what I understand, it'll get better after a few thousand miles.

So far, I am very happy with my purchase. My only gripe is the tips are lame. I'm going to work on a fix. I don't want to cut them off as I understand it may change the tone. Instead, I will try to find another larger tip that can slip over the end. Sort of like BMW tips seen here.

Back to the subject matter though. I wish I started with this exhaust. I know it's been only 1 day but it seems to be the sound I've been searching. Had I went to it in the first place, it would have saved me hundreds of dollars and given months of enjoyment.

Are you running it with all stock cats?

It definitely is a great sounding setup.

Thanks op
Sorry to go off topic, but has anyone ver tried removing some of the packing material to see how it sounds. Id be curious, since the IS mufflers are supposedly stock with different packing.
I was thinking of trying this, should I replace the packing or just remove some of it any tips? (once again sorry to go off topic)

I was hoping this would be a DIY on how to make your stock mufflers into the PE ones. Lol wishful thinking I know.
Enjoy your PE OP. btw which magma flow system did you have?

Right now, yes. Have my AR's needing to get reinstalled. However, I think I'll go a few thousand miles with the current setup. I want to get a feel for it. From what I understand, CL DP's will make it louder and add rasp until you get resonators. I'm fine with all that but for now, I want a baseline in terms of sound if that makes any sense.

You know, I could take a stock muffler (being that I have 2 of them), and cut it open to look inside. I could remove the material and swap them back and forth. I don't mind it either. Problem is I don't have access to a blow torch nor can I weld it back closed. If someone can do it for me, I'll be down to donate a muffler and test it on my setup.

Reading my title... that makes sense. I'm down for a fun test should anyone nearby have a blow torch and have some welding skills. Have an extra muffler just for this purpose.

If you can find someone that can open it up and re-weld it back, I'm sure the community will not be able to thank you enough. That is some valuable information. External dimension of the mufflers are identical it seems. My guess is that the packing and tubing may be the only differences.

My PE makes the car sound like a ferrari...its hard to explain but it has ZERO rice sound and really sounds like a high performance race car. I LOVE it.

Once you go catless you are going to hate the PE exhaust. It's going to sound raspy and drone like hell.

That's disappointing here. Do you speak from experience? If so, do you have an automatic? At what point does the sound go to shit? Catless DP's? Secondaries removed? What exactly?

Now that I found the sound I've been looking for, I'm willing to give up horsepower gains if need be.

Glad to hear you like the sound, this maybe my next mod
fwiw i would have paid the $125 to have it installed as I have no way to lift my car or a way to cut the pipe.

Hmm.. interesting... I do not have that raspy noise... more ferrari like without rice....
I did had problems with heat shields... after making sure that the shields did not longer touch the exhaust all side noise was gone....

Sound is subjective but my friend just got the setup and added DPs and he cant stand to drive the car at the moment till he gets some resonators welded on! You might like it but I have heard it and its not a clean sound at all. I am sorry but if thats your taste, then obviously you dont agree which is the case.

I agree, taste is subjective...... My point was more that raspy/ unclean sound is to my experience not related to the PE/DP's... it's actualy quite clean... but crying up high in the revs...

Might be too early for you to tell but I once saw a dyno chart posted online that showed a slight shift in the torque curve(ie higher up the band) when an exhaust flapper was disconnected in an OEM e92 n54. He had before and after dynos - to which I will search for and post if I find them.

So my question is - have you noticed any difference in power delivery with the BMW PE?

I will note that the EU version has a flapper but it has been stated here more than once that it's to comply with noise regulations or whatever they call it over there.

BTW, nice work and great photos!!

Any side by side shots of the PE and OEM mufflers?
