hmm you shouldn't need anything special. i've always just used a skinny extension and haven't had any issues

i just replaced my plugs. all you need is a socket wrench(of course bmw spark plug tool), plus extension. Though maybe it was my extension but it really wasnt turning smoothly but it came out fine.

its pretty straight forward.

Make sure you have the correct socket tool...

You need a thin-walled 14mm 12-pt plug tool to clear the bend in the plug well, and a long extension. Be wary of where you buy the tool from since I bought one which was advertised as N54-specific but the socket walls were still too thick to remove the plug. I bought the schwaben socket next and it works well.

Just use a thin walled socket, don't need anything special.

You don't need that. I got mine out with a straight 10" extension.

I just did mine this past weekend with almost the exact same setup as this. The second to last spark plug from the firewall was being blocked by the strut bar, and I'm positive that the universal joint provided the necessary slack angle to get it out without a problem.

Can you get away without the universal joint? Sounds like it. Will it solve the problem? Absolutely. I rememeber my first thought was "holy crap can I even get an angle on this plug?". My second thought (shortly thereafter) was "oh great, good thing I followed the DIY and got the universal joint, this could have been a problem."

EDIT: P.S. I used a spark plug socket tool from BMS. The built-in magnet was also helpful.
