Intercooler or METH?

Hello,

I am thinking about buying a new mod soon. Current list
JB3 (will upgrade to 4 soon)
Intake
catless downpipes
Miltek exhaust

I am debating between the BIG TOM intercooler or Meth kit.

I have no knowledge about Meth kits at all. I just hear you guys talking so much about it.

What do you guys suggest? Big Tom IC or Meth kit?

and which is a good meth kit, which comes with EVERYTHING a noob needs?

OR would you guys suggest a different mod?

Like a Oil catch can
or upgrade the oil cooler?
etc.

I would upgrade to the JB4 first and then get one of the FSB kits (either trunk mount or WW depending on your preference) They incorporate very well with the JB4.

The advice I always give is to get the Meth Kit your tuner supports.

FMIC = Passive
Meth = Active

Depends if you wan't something working all the time, or just when activated. That being said, when meth is spraying, it will lower your IAT's more than a FMIC and CAI combined. If you can swing it, get both. If bought used, you can have them both for under $1,000.

Are there any downsides to meth?
All I hear about is how it actively cools your engine. I always hear pros, not cons. For some reason I was under the impression that it strains your engine.

I would go with e FMIC. I have ran meth on my past 2 cars and won't ever run it again. I didn't blow an engine or have any damages, it is just a PITA to keep the tank full and buy meth. It becomes an inconvenience.

It's corrosive to aluminum, however, it won't be touching anything aluminum There are several guys using the winshield wiper tank setups who had spill overs and caught their engine on fire, leading into thousands of $ in repairs. IMO meth near hot exhaust manifolds is a bad idea, so do a trunk mount to be safe.

Running a WIJ system without fails safes could damage the engine. If you are spraying and one second it goes dry or clogged, the ECU might not be able to pull timing fast enough and you could damage a cylinder.

i would have gone with, if you dont go windshield or cheap out in general you will be fine.

i just conceded to have a professional install my kit, because this seems a bit outside my safety zone.

If it was a good bolt on intercooler or meth it would be a harder decision, if you only have 300 bucks, get the meth and then save up for a decent bolt on intercooler.

That's an important point to make and I'm glad somebody brought that up. The closest place to me that sells meth is 25 minutes out of the way of my daily commute, so I'd have to make that trip once every other month or so...

No magnesium in an N54, only the N52 variants.
This was a rhetorical question to point out a ridiculous statement...

Ah, I didn't know that.

"The N54B30 does not use the second generation Valvetronic technology found in the naturally aspirated N52 and the newer (single) turbocharged straight-6 N55.
Surprisingly the engine block of the N54B30 is similar to the older generation BMW M54B30 engine - all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. This is because the newer N52 aluminum-magnesium engine block was not deemed as suitable for turbo-charging with the above-mentioned engineering goals. As a result, the N54B30 is physically heavier (195 kg (430 lb)) than the very light (161 kg (355 lb)) N52 engine. "

I guess what he is referring too is that the iron cylinders see the majority of the meth and not the rest of the aluminum engine.

Whichever one you decide to go with, don't do it cheap(especially the meth kit.)
You get what you pay for.

Please sir explain to me how my statement was ridiculous? I guarentee you 100% meth will never touch anything aluminum inside the engine. We do not spray directly into our cylinders, so meth is completely atomized before it enters the engine. To be corrosive to aluminum, it would have to sit in a pool of liquid aluminum. Do frequent oil changes and you will never have an issue.
