E90 electronics failure due to water leak
Hi,
Yesterday my 2009 e90 318d just completed went dead in traffic. The only warning light in the dash was for vehicle electronics failure. After taking it to the local main dealer today it took hours to identify that a water leak had caused corrosion of leads in the boot to the front of the car. My bill to this stage is over 300 euros just to tell me this. Another 130 euro will be needed to do a water test to identify the source of the leak. I was told that the cost of parts will be over 1100 euros(for new battery, leads, cables, housing etc) and probably another 1500 euros in labour. They suspect possibly the seal may be broken around the boot or gap between the rear light and boot (but not sure til they do a water test). They showed me the cables and the corrosion and water had deposited in the boot. The car has never had an impact has less than 9000kms genuine on the clock. Has anyone heard of anything like this before or offer any advice? The warranty expired last year. Is there any comeback? Thanks |

That was helpful....
OP, are you original owner? If not, and you're out of warranty, it will be tough proving this is a manufacturer's defect. I personally have not heard of any issue with the E9x chassis concern a leak in the trunk. |

Thanks Alpine,
Im the second owner, good friends with the lad i bought it from and i work with him. I bought his previous car an e46 from him too so i know the car is genuine. It must be incredibly bad luck. Im gonna get the water test done tomorrow and a copy of their findings before the repairs are done. Ive searched the net and havent seen any reported leaks that could do this much damage, without any warning, until the electronics of the car just go dead. |

after a full day of looking at the car and doing the water test, the source of the leak still hasnt been found. The battery was found to be surrounded by 4 inches of water that caused the corrosion.
