Brake light failure

Hi Guys, I had brake light failures a couple of times when my car was under warranty, the dealer said he changed the bulbs - twice in one week. Since then, it's been fine until now - out of warranty. I get a failure on one side, the wife slams the boot and it goes out. OK for a while, and then I get a failure on the other side.

I understand this is a known problem with the bulb holders, has anyone here had this fixed by the dealer for free outside of warranty?

You know its the exact same bulb everytime?

Check for corrosion or a bad contact.

Might be an excuse to tell the wife you want LCI taillights

Not sure on that, when I've got around to taking a look, the warning light goes out. Does anybody know what exactly is the problem with the holders, as suggested, is it corrosion, can they be cleaned or the contacts adjusted?

I was hoping to avoid the work and just get the dealer to fix it for me!

OK, had time yesterday to take a good look. Whole lamp assembly just clips out - sure enough, one brake bulb was not working. Not real easy to pull out the bulbs, as I wasn't sure how they were held in. They're the moulded glass type ones with exposed wires that wrap over the end. A firm pull does the trick. I swapped the bulbs around and they both worked. So it seems that it's the contacts that are not really reliable. I'm not sure whether it's the bulb wires or the holder contacts, but with a bit of wiggling and pushing they both work OK now.
