Different Clays

Which one do you think is better,.. Mother's or Meguiar's???

I haven't used clay in my life and I'm planning on doing some detailing this weekend.

I personally prefer the Meguiar's brand but I'd like to hear from your opinions.

I can't tell you whether Meguiar's or Mother's is better, but I've always used Clay Magic and have been very pleased with the results. Just make sure that you wash your car very well and use plenty of lubricant (insert joke here). You should not use pressue when gliding it over the paint, and make sure to knead the clay frequently so that you are not rubbing contaminants into the paint. You'll be amazed how much clay picks up and how smooth your paint will be afterwards!

I haven't used Mother's clay in a very long while, but the one I used awhile ago wasn't good. It fell apart on me. However, IIRC all new clay has been reformulated and is basically Clay Magic stuff. Meguiar's should be fine.

Thank you guys!

Any tips on claying,... I will wash the car with meguiar's gold class shampoo, dry it, then clay with meguiar's and then wax with meguiar's nxt.

Is this the correct order??

That's about the right order. However, I would suggest that you re-wash the car after claying to remove the lubricant. Don't forget to use a lot of the lubricant, don't use pressure, and knead the clay frequently to expose fresh clay. I'd also suggest breaking the clay into pieces, just in case you drop the piece you're working with. Never use clay that has dropped on the ground. Good luck!

Thank you!!!

I'll post pictures after I finish since I'm also changing my grilles to black ones.

Just one more question.

What's the avg time life of clay, how many times can I use it,... can I clean it, if so, how,...???

It turned out to be more than one question, but it just needs a big answer LOL

You don't... the clay sucks up crud, then it's done. I usually break off a small piece, use it until it's noticeably discolored or I can't knead it clear, then toss it and break off another piece. The stickies at the top have good instructions.

Clay cannot be cleaned. Once it's dirty...toss it. It's cheaper to throw it away rather than fix scratches in your paint. If you don't use a part of the bar, you can wrap it well in plastic wrap and put in in a ziploc bag. I've done that, and it's lasted a rather long time.

Get a spray bottle full of filtered/distilled water and put a little car shampoo in it to keep the surface wet/lubed. Spray, spray, rub... Spray, spray, rub... Keep the clay away from lower section of your car until your are done with the top first. Do the wheels last. Make sure the car is really well washed, and really well rinsed before and after claying.

I originally got clay to remove the neighbor's oversparay on my motorcycle:mad: I went to a paint shop and got a blue 3M brand. The yellow clay I got from Zaino was a bit of a joke, especially after the blue stuff. I haven't gone back and redone the clay, although when I felt teh paint today, even after 2 coats of Z5, it's time to go back to teh paint shop.
