Disabled control valve on 328i exhaust for better sound

I like exhaust sound. As you all know the 328i has almost none.

I disabled the control valve on the second exhaust pipe. It was even easier to do than on the prior generation car. This value is electrically operated instead of pneumatic. I had been concerned that I would have to cut the control stem or fuss with the wiring - but was concerned about throwing a code. Turned out to take exactly 30 seconds to disable mechanically.

BTW you can check to make sure the valve is open by feeling if the exhaust is coming out of the second pipe.

The bad news is that it made very little difference in sound.

So, now I am on to stage two of my options for getting a little more sound. I will keep you all informed.

What did you do to disable it? What is stage 2?

I really like the manga flow sound on the Audi 2.0t and I suspect it would sound similar on ours.... It makes the 2.0 sound like a 6 cylinder.. Perhaps this is our solution to the problem?

To disable it, just remove the U shaped spring wire that connects the valve stem from the actuator.

When would this 2nd (assuming inner) exhaust normally open out of interest?

just did this on my 335 today. if you use a screwdriver you can easily pop the spring wire out of place and then zip tie the flap open. I will post some pics this week.

i wouldn't zip tie anything near the exhaust... use a paper clip instead?

zip tie isn't on the exhaust, its on the mount. I agree that a zip tie on the exhaust would be a problem. and a paper clip wouldn't be strong enough imo

1st mod and new to forum!

Just did this on my 328i and i also used zip ties. I only pried off the end of the U wire clip closest to the actuator and tied it down. dnt know if im supposed to unplug the actual wire thats connected on there also but for future references tying the clip in the up position opens the valve..correct me if im wrong or share your thoughts

make sure its real tight so it doesnt rattle. haven't gone for a test drive yet, but i will tomorrow n will be checking for faults/misc concerns and f/u if needed.

I experimented with this but as stated it didnt seem to make much difference and if you dont secure the flap tight enough you'll get a horendous rattling

...interested to see what your "stage 2" is

I experimented this on my 335i as well (I know this is the N20 thread). No perceptible sound difference at all. Much ado about nothing really. I put it back to stock.

My english is not the best (sorry), but i asked BMW Austria and the answear was

According to information from the competent colleagues with the silencer
Part number 18 30 2 293 769
during the fourth quarter of 2012, with each BMW partner ordered in Austria.

I hope you can also order the performance exhaust this year because the sound is not a 245 ps gasoline worthy

We just started work on Borla aftermarket exhaust options for the F30 328i. If there are any specific ideas you guys would like to see us include in our designs please let me know. Can't promise that we'll do everything that is asked but we'll certainly do our best for you. I am certain we can improve the sound and may even offer more than one sound option.

For those of you who have disabled the exhaust valve, did this cause a CEL?

If you unplug the connector, it doesn't throw a CEL, but it does store a code... it came up using the BavTech scanner.

The first thing would be to use the dual round rolled angle cut. I think a cat back system would work well. Another thought would be to ensure the mounting rods were just like the oem. I would also like to see all stainless with a lifetime guarantee. Magnaflow offers one on their system. I don't think the valve is a big issue. Just finding a place to tie the actuating motor to or having a mounting tab on the pipes would be nice. I had one of your systems on a 2004 Toyota Camry with the four cylinder. I loved it. I hope you make systems for the N20 and the N55 engines.
