All vehicles should have an "ideal" oil temp of over 212 degrees F. Not more than say 280F. Although, even at 280f, it's better than low oil temps (short trips, stop and go,low speed in cold weather, ect.)
You want it to be over the boiling point of H2O, so that moisture in the oil vaporizes, and rids the oil of condensation. Most synthetic oils have a very high flash/burning point, so they can survive the high heat very well. Just my bit of info. Last edited by JIMD1709; 06-18-2007 at 10:40 AM.. |

The highest my 328i has hit was 250. And that was on a 90 degree day running high speeds on the interstate.

My supercharged M3 usually sees max of 250, although Ive seen it as high as 270 when I used to drag it and the track temp was 110.

Just so you know, the interstate doesn't really count as a rigorous test for your oil, try stop and go traffic, revving the engine high, slowing down, revving high, slowing down, etc.

Well...no info on other car temps, but...
95F today with relative humidity around 65% (ugh...) 80mph 30min trip - a/c on all the way...just a bit of stop and go - never went above 240F. Non sport package here so i don't have that extra oil cooler. My car doesn't have issues... |

I think the OP meant other cars on THIS forum. Not other cars in the world. Dont think your dads cars temp is relevent here. But good to know for future reference.

My old E46 M3 stayed just a tad to the right past 210F and never moved. Even when it was reading 120F outside and driving hard. Now the water temp would move up and down depending on how hard I drove.
E90 no clue the POS doesnt have an oil temp gauge. One of the 2 things I hate on my E90 no oil temp and the auto transmission sucks. |

Try driviing in HK w/ AC on, you will "boil" the car in an hour or two stuck in traffic jams that only moves you a mile per hour. I have seen a lot of "prestigious" European cars "cooked" this way. Delicious...
