2nd gear grinding
has anyone had a case of chronic grinding in 2nd?
when i test drove an M Roadster i got the 2nd to grind a few times unexpectedly. I'm a very experienced track driver, i don't grind gears. I thought that maybe the poor little M Roadster demo had been abused by a bunch of idiots. now i've had my M Coupe for about two weeks and 1900 Km and got the grinding 2nd four times. WTH? anyone?

It's not just the M's, it took me a while to figure out the 1>2 in the Zed.
The key is to shift like you do on a bike; pre-load the shift lever while still applying power in 1st and then allow the clutch disengagement to allow the shift. If power is still on, you can put a good deal of rearward pressure on the lever without it coming out of 1st. This results in a quicker, smoother shift without the risk of having the pedal coming off the floor while the lever is still travelling. Unless I'm just poking around town, I now pre-load all of my shifts. |

It's true tho...if your accelerating fast and your body is being thrown backward and you're trying to kick the clutch while you're also trying to shift quickly it can be a difficult proposition. You know what they say...practice makes perfect.

1)You can try to sit closer to the steering wheel and firewall. 2)Get a clutch stop to shorten the travel of clutch. 3)It is less likely to happen again when you got some miles on the car(after you get familiar with you car) . The transmission will also "loose up" a little bit after some good track days My car is super smooth right now compared to when it is new. |

I don't think the clutch stop would help - it doesn't change the engagement point. If anything, it might make it worse if it inhibits full disengagement of the clutch...
Do M's have the CDV thingy? I removed mine on the 3.0i and it made a world of difference. |

I don't really have any problem with 2nd...
I have the CDV deleted... but don't see what that has to do with gear engagement. It wasn't any different before CDV delete, other than the box was still breaking in. 2nd is a little tougher to engage when downshifting.... but a shorter gear is always harder to engage. I def don't get any grinding... Occasionally, I'll get a little *snik* if my timing is a little off.

However,I think my gear changing is much smoother after some track days. It might be the car or me getting better with rev match and H/T. |
