Gas mileage FTL :-(
I dont know what is going on here but my MPG is deplorable. Last tank I averaged 17.6mpg. I cant understand how this happens.
I drive 25 miles each way to work in traffic thats any from stop to 80mph. It typically takes me 45 mins to get to work in this traffic. If there were no traffic it would take me about 20 mins. Just for kicks, I decided this tankfull I was going to stay out of boost entirely. Being that I have a boost gauge, this makes it easy to see. Im now down 1/4 of a tank and have gone 92 miles. While this is much better than what I got before, its still only averaging a bit over 20mpg. To me, its not really worth staying out of boost and not having fun. Is traffic taking THAT much of a toll on my mpg? Or is there something wrong with my fuel system?

I wouldn't recommend using the gas gauge as a very accurate judge of how much you've actually used. Wait for the rest of the tank to be used before judging. I know on my STi that the first 1/4 goes down much faster than the last 1/4.

Honestly, the computer gauge is pretty accurate Ive found. Also I find that when I turn my car on after a long drive, the gas needle is about 1 tick lower than before.

I find my gas mileage (E90 330) varies greatly depending on the driving style, so this doesn't surprise me. For city driving, I am in the high teens for MPG, and I drive gently (too gently, too many people walking around the city - it's killing me).
For my 50 miles highway trips down to Indiana, I can average very close to 30 MPG. The difference is amazing. I see your point and agree with you - stop and go traffic seems to have a larger impact on the E90 mileage than other cars I have owned - although I admit I haven't really examined this closely, and have only put a few tanks of gas in the car (drive it about 150 miles per month on average, what a crime). |

I filled up yesterday and put in exactly 15 gallons. Had 258 miles on that tank. As much sense as it seems to make, not getting on boost really works to save gas. LOL this is where you all say DUH. But its so hard to stay out of boost.

258 huh? Sheesh..I guess I have more tolerance than most people here. I constantly average 350 or more to a tank of gas. Cruise control is your friend! I constantly make trips to NJ, CT or Philly...so all the highway driving I get great gas mileage..my best tank was 382 miles. Stop and go traffic really kills things though...I would only get about 280-300 if I did a lot of stop and go traffic. I just leave the active MPG gauge on, on the dash all the time...when I see that magical 35-36mpg cruising at 65, I like to keep my foot out of it...just knowing that the honda civic next to me is trying to make that, and its only 4 cylinders and no boost |

you must have your foot in that throttle plenty
isn't the 335 supposed to get near 30 mpg on the freeway? I get over 350 per tank in normal use, and can get 400 on road trips |

Yeah, I guess a lot has to do with my traffic driving. I havent taken it on any long trips yet so I cant say Ive stretched its legs. Oh well, looks like Ill just accept my fate. On with the boost.

I was getting 16 MPG when i drove lightly on my G... anything over that is a plus.
I have noticed with the 335i... a milimeter of travel of the gas pedal reflects a couple or more mpg savings. try easing back while crusing and see how it goes. Try to adjust your driving style. ppp

as long as your tires are inflated properly and the car is running properly I can get 11 mpg on a racetrack, or 33 mpg on the freeway I'm sure you could do the same |

I have a 2006 325i and my gas mileage is about the same. I have a 10-15 minute drive to work all in stop-start-stop-start traffic. |

Screw it!!!! Don't even worry about it...
Fill up when you need gas, and drive the shit outta the thing. Seriously, you'll be surprised at just how much happier and more enjoyable you'll find the driving experience when you simply don't worry about fuel costs/mileage. You have to have gas, you enjoy riving or you wouldn't have spent the money on a BMW. So just drive that thing, live on the boost, and be happy... Sweat the bigger things.
