iDrive Burps
Wife's August 2005 delivery e90 finally received Progman 25.02 on May 19th. Up to that time (almost 2 years), she'd never had any problems at all with iDrive. This weekend, for the first time, it "burped". That is, upon startup the BMW welcome screen flashed a couple times and then went blank, and none of the idrive functions worked. We went into a store for about 15 minutes, and when she restarted, iDrive came back . . . but with some issues. Specifically, Sirius was whacky in that only about 1/3 of the stations appeared in the ALL STATIONS list and selection of an available station took you to a different station than that selected. I tried to "reboot" but the Power-Delete-Delete combo did absolutely nothing at all. The next morning, though, everything seemed to be fine again.
In any case, I'd be interested in hearing if others are having similar issues -- whether this is an anomoly or whether she can now expect this to happen frequently. Bummer.

Funny, exact same thing happened to me today. Stopped somewhere on the way to work for 5 minutes, got back in the car and poof, the thing starts up and goes blank, and keeps flashing gray every 2 minutes.
I called up my dealer and was going to bring it in for them to check out at lunch, but as I got in the car to head down there it started up again. I can't wait until this happens again! Oh, and yeah I have 25.02 as well. I also find that every time I start the car the CD player skips after 10 seconds, without fail. I love BMW, they fix 2 things and break 3. |

Do you have Sirius? The system now seems to intermittently switch from displaying all stations to displaying presets only.

If it happens more than once, it is likely it will need replacement of the CCC.

I have the exact same problem when I leave the audio mode in CD and return to the car, it sounds as though the CD skips after the car starts. |

Idrive Reset
Yesterday I was attempting to make a call using the A-Z display and the Idrive froze. The system would not respond to any inputs but the radio kept working. After about 30 seconds the system restarted and has worked fine since. All of this happened while driving (no keyoff sequence). This is the first and only time I have seen a problem in the past 2 1/2 months of ownership.

My CCC was replaced in December -- in fact, the whole of the iDrive system was replaced -- yet I still have this problem at least twice a month. I don't have Sirius.

Happened to me yesterday, first time, 650 miles on the car. Started the car and the map came up right away, no "BMW" screen first. The small display on the right side was blank. The IPOD was playing, where I had last left it, but no volume control, no steering wheel control buttons, no phone, nothing but the map. Controller on the center console didn't work; luckily the mute button on the radio worked.
I thought maybe I forgot to "accept" when I started the car and it froze the system. I used the SOS button and that did work; nothing they could do, but it worked. I turned the car off for 10 minutes, restarted and everything worked. I don't know what a CCC is but it sounds painful.

Our screen has started to black-out more and more frequently. It'll flicker like an old TV, then go out. All I-drive stuff stops working too. I really hope this is not something the dealer has to replicate in order to fix becuase it is totally random.

Resurrecting this thread -- this just happened to me yesterday for the first time. I was driving to a tire place get a new set of 162's and tires put on and I got the intermittent flicker with the gray screen and none of the iDrive functions worked. After picking up the car again it was working.
My question is what have people done about this? Just wait and see if it recurs? Take it to the dealer immediately to get it on the record?

If you take it to the dealer they will look at it and, unless they can duplicate it while in their care, there's not much they can/will do. I would suggest the next time it occurs and you're near the dealer to take it straight in, leave the car on, and have the SA come out to take a look. If you turn it off it is likely to reset itself before the SA can verify the problem. On a 2006 you should still have a little bit of warranty left (barring high mileage).
Good luck.

Well it happened to me again today. Screen wouldn't come on but would flash gray every minute or so. However, this time it eventually flashed the BMW logo and started working again after about 15 minutes of driving. Unfortunately the dealer's service department is closed on Saturdays. I'll have to get this fixed before the warranty expires in 10 months.

It's a problem with the CCC and/or TMU modules.
After my third CCC was replaced BMW claimed it was because I was using a non-approved cell phone with my US-spec car. They stated that the Nokia 6230i wasn't approved for the 2006 model even though a) they sold an adapter in the USA for the Nokia 6230i, b) the photograph on the BMWUSA.com website on the communications page was a Nokia 6230i. A year later I was told flat out by a BMW Service Advisor in the US that "no Nokia cell phone has ever been approved for use in a BMW 3-series."

Take heart. When mine happened I took it in with it still kaput. When they went out to drive the car into the service area it was working. They checked it out and rebooted it, declared it good to go, and called me to pick it up. Thirty minutes later they called again and said the problem was still there. They were able to trap the error code right there and determined the CCC was shot. Three days later the part came in from Germany. They should have ordered more at the same time.

Well I just dropped off my car at the dealer after having a third episode of the iDrive continuously rebooting every 30 seconds last week. The SA couldn't t say how long it would take to figure out the problem but anticipated that it could take until the end of the week or early next week. As you suggested, SoYank, when the problem happened this latest time I drove straight to the dealer to show them. They unfortunately didn't have anyone available to hook up the car to a diagnostic system so they told me to bring it back later. Of course, the problem hasn't recurred since.

I got my car back from the dealer after 2 days. They ended up just updating the progman to version 32. Let's see if that does anything.
The repair description reads as follows: "CCC software error used the GT1 performed a short test found most system faults. performed most system analysis test module. Found the CC had 5* next to it. The CCC has a software error. As per the test plan reprogrammed the entire vehicle. Used progman SW version 32. Performed a measures plan and programmed the complete vehicle including the CAS and CCC. After programming rechecked the operation of the CCC and all of it's functions. The cmoplete I-Drive system is now operating normal." Also got an oil change, oil filter replacement, brake fluid service, new windshield wipers, and a new at gear shift knob (on old one the aluminum trim was peeling; got the new model version) at the same time.
