3M vinyl to match Space Grey

Is there a 3M vinyl wrap color that matches space grey pretty well?

covering up damage? or wrapping a spoiler or something do you can put off painting it?

problem with vinyl is it always looks like you just got a paint job with some severe die-back problems

Wrapping spoiler. Body shops near me charge way too much.

like i said, it's going to stick out pretty bad. usually if you want to get away with vinyl, it has to be contrasting, not matching.

try another bodyshop? you can even prep and prime it yourself so all they have to do is spray the basecoat and clear if they'll let you.

To answer your first question, no vinyl out there will perfectly match an OEM paint color (unless you're talking basic econobox black or white really...and even that won't be perfect). It simply just doesn't exist. You're going to have to get it painted SG if you want it SG. A good paint job may be a little pricey, but it's worth it. What was your body shop quoting? I'll be honest with you if that's a fair offer or not.

CF wrap is too ricey. It looks really bad on exterior parts IMO. Too obvious that it's fake. And on the larger parts, the pattern can exhibit "weaves" if not handled carefully (see here http://www.1addicts.com/forums/attac...9&d=1319102693)

What about wrapping it in metallic black? SDfranco1 used to have an E92 Pre-LCI that was SG with black accents, and it looked great! But still...if that's the only part that would be metallic black, it will look really, really stupid.

So yeah, what were you quoted for paint?

Yeah...that's a bit...a lot...much...and the anticrack additive is the biggest BS I've heard today to be honest with you. You don't add something to the clear coat to make it not crack...it cracks because the paint job was shit.

Time to find a new shop?

$300 for a spoiler is excessive. Shop around, it should about $150.

There is a vinyl that matches space grey. The hard part is finding a vinyl that has metallics in it. Most vinyls are a flat color, whether gloss, satin or matte; most lack any pearls, or metallics that a real paintjob have in them. I have been recommending this vinyl to people with both silver and space grey cars. Many people have PM'ed me, bout it and agreed that it looks good. However, this was on a reflector or other small items. Not a whole spoiler. There's alot more to painting that just spraying on paint. A good paint job is all in the prep. It will look like crap if its not prepped right and if you just wrap the spoiler in vinyl without doing any bodywork to it, it will probably come out looking OK, although not OEM looking. Here's that vinyl if you want to order some and have a stab at it....

If I remember correctly, it is Oracal's gloss graphite. I'd call and make sure but they do carry glossy metallic vinyls.

Thanks! Looks more like glossy silver metallic to me but I will give them a ring to find out... Hopefully

Might as well just buy a pre-painted eBay spoiler for $80.

It's a front bumper lip spoiler, not a trunk or roof spoiler.
