My 3.5 Year old got locked in the car
Had to rush to my daughters school to unlock our 335xi which had locked itself with my daughter strapped in her car seat. I broke a few speed limits and pissed off a few people on that drive.
My wife put her bag (with keys in it) on the front passenger seat, closed that door, then strapped my daughter into her seat in the back. When she closed my daughters door the car locked. I got there before my wife smashed the window but another 5 minutes she would have as the car was in the sun and my daughter was sweating like crazy and was very scared. My question is how could this happen. The only answer I can come up with is that as she closed my daughters door the keys shifted in her bag causing the lock button to be hit. Although it takes a reasonable amount of force to press the lock button on the key fob and it seems unlikely that keys shifting in a bag could cause the lock button to be pressed. Has anyone else had any issues with the locks on their 3-series. I know these cars can have electronic gremlins, my old 540 had a few annoying seat memory problems. I'm happy to pass it off as a freak circumstance (and have told my wife not to leave the keys in the car) but want to know if it may be a problem. Thanks |

Thats why i never leave the keys inside the car anywhere...always in the pocket until it goes into the fob slot. Pockets are wonderful things
Sorry to hear of the scare, I can only imagine how crazy that must have been. |

sounds like the auto-relock "feature"
on newer models, especially w/idrive there's an option for that it keeps you from leaving your car unlocked accidentally, or it locks your children in the car. or if the driver's side door was closed, you can actually hit the lock button, and the car will lock, then all you have to do is close the door and it's locked (with keys inside if you've placed them inside) |

Yikes - that is horrible.
I seriously doubt the keys could have been "pushed" in the purse because, as you said, it would require too much force. Although you know that that is what BMW would say if asked. I am certain I would have broken a window had it been my child. I guess you must have been very close by. Also, I can only imagine how pissed I would be if BMW did not agree to cover repairs on the window I broke.

Sorry to hear this happened. BTW, its you people that prevents BMW from enabling the "lock as I walk away" feature. Really wish I could get my car to lock itself like yours did!

I've broken windows before... Small price to pay for health and welfare of a pet or child.
Also locked myself out in the rockies once. Parked at the trailhead, got distracted, unloaded, locked up and shut the doors... Freaking keys looking at me in the seat. Ah well, went hiking for 3 days came back, car was still there and I had a rock picked out.

Doc, I am dubious as well, however there have been several threads on this and references to articles on it claiming it worked. I really don't care though, because I have pockets that I use to keep my keys in when I exit my vehicle. It has worked well over the years.

That's horrible. I had a similar experience (less my kid ) getting locked out of my 335i before. I have CA and I accidentally left my keyfob in my work bag and threw it in the trunk (before I unlocked my car door). I closed my trunk and it locked, which it's never supposed to do since it should have detected my keyfob inside the car. Thankfully, I was able to call BMW Assist and they have this new feature called "Remote Unlock" where they send a remote wireless signal via satellite to your car, which in turn unlocks the car...and it worked!!!!
Naturally, however, my BMW dealer had my car for 3 days but couldn't figure out why it malfunctioned. Now, I just make sure that my keyfob is always in my pocket.

What if his/her subscription has lapsed? Would they still do that?
