3 Series Crash Test Video
Hey,
Just found this. Basically you choose make and model and then a video shows how it did during crash testing. BMW 325i did good on both front and side. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/c...htestvideo.htm

Is the Lancer considered competition for the other models? Either way it seems Lexus and BMW both have good ratings.

Watched this earlier today, surprising how much damage the cars can take at 30-40mph only! The bimmer's wheels were off the ground upon the front impact.

Some prospective E9x buyers consider the Evo, which is a Lancer.

Its 40 front and 31 side.
You have to keep in mind the 40 is a fixed barrier. But also 40 mph doesnt seem fast but the forces at that speed with all that weight easily can tear and twist metal like butter. Take a look at a heavier car such as the 5 series it looks a lot worse off than the 3 series since is has more mass to slow down but it also has more crumple zone and more metal to help slow that mass down over time which is important. 40 mph X 3,500lbs =140,000 40mph x 4,500lbs= 180,000 So in order for a 3 series to have the same force as a 5 series hitting that barrier at 40mph it would have to be going around 55mph. |

Here's a picture of another BMW in a recent crash test. It was the 195 mph airborne head on into a retaining wall crash test. The car was totalled but received a "good" rating in the "explosive multiple impacts from every angle while torpedo rolling down a track" test.
