Google Street View + BMW NAV...

Do you think that in near future we will be able to utilize BMW's Nav with Google Street View?

I know there were some articles stating that BMW will integrate with google maps, but will BMW take it to the next level (Street View)?

To compare the scenery. If you think that you may be lost, you can look at the Nav screen and see if it looks like outside your car

The processing power needed for that would be crazy, just not financially feasible given the little help it yields for the driver.

I agree it'd be nice, but don't think it will happen.

No doubt we're heading towards wi-fi access in cars, and BMW will be at the leading edge. So, anything is possible.

But street view appears somewhat pointless while driving.

There has been talk on Wallstreet of Google or Microsoft buying Navteq. I dont know if they'll do anything with the maps and views but they have talked about using it as advertising. Like Bestbuy paying to have all of there stores show up on our Nav screens. Smart for Google sucks for us. IMHO

Shares of Navteq (NVT), which sells maps used in car navigation systems and on Web sites, are jumping for a second straight day on speculation the company may get bought. Microsoft (MSFT) and Google’s (GOOG) discussion of mapping technology at a conference this week prompted speculation Wednesday that Google might perhaps want to buy the company, according to a report from American Technology Research analyst Robert Sanderson. Thursday, William Blair analyst Bill Benton commented that private equity could be interested in taking private the $4.2 billion market cap company.

That's exactly what I was going to say... It's like Standing outside checking the weather report.

Please, see my post above.

EX: And you could be filling up at a GAS station when you get a phone call that you need to meet an important client in 30 min. at some coffe place.

I would personally want to know what that coffe place looks like before I head up that way. Know which side of which street is the entrance, so you know where to park. Or if it is a big company office building and you need to park, it would be nice to know how that building looks like, right? Dont you think it would be nice?

I would prefer to have Internet access. Since my phone is already connected via Bluetooth, it shouldn't take much effort to have a simple browser on the iDrive screen. Then my passengers could watch my Slingbox and anything else they might want to do.

The sad part is that I bet this is already enabled in some market outside of the USA

What nav needs

The feature I would appreciate on the nav system is a version of Garmin's "Via Points". This let's you select the route you want to take and you could use for prompting exits and turns. The current software assumes you can't find you way home from the grocery store.
