Cobb Advice

Just bought a Cobb AP on a impulse buy. Anybody have any tips or info they want to share on it. Any FAQ's/tutorial or anything I should read before trying to use it? I did very limited research before I let my impulse get the better of me so hopefully people are happy with it. Thanks.

Are you able to save the custom tune onto the AP and go between that and OTS maps? Have you used the OTS maps? I had heard that OTS maps usually run rich or lean because they are so generic, you ever run into any issues running OTS maps? Can they do any damage to the motor or car?

The AP is a great product. I have owned since 05 for my WRX STi. Have a custom COBB Dyno tune for my car.

COBB tunes for Mid Range Torque, not so much for top end performance. They do this to preserve long term engine safety. You will immediately notice the power increase.

Many other good features as well.

OTS maps are conservative thus they run rich (gas mileage will suffer). You will notice a difference just with the AP itself, but if you do bolt on mods as well to run Stage 2+, it becomes really fun.

OTS is conservative in their mapping. I've never heard of a case of a OTS Cobb map ever running lean. Rich perhaps, but there is a much lower risk running rich than lean.

The AP allows you to switch between maps either through a re-flash which saves the settings to the cars flash memory or on the fly which allows you to switch between maps without a re-flash while driving. I personally am unsure how well the on the fly changing actually works. So to answer you question, yes, you can store multiple maps (I presently have 10+ on my cobb AP) that you can switch between with ease. I typically will switch between a conservative 19 PSI map for DD in my WRX and a 21 PSI aggressive map for track / auto x events.

As with any mod there are risk you will be running higher boost levels and putting out more power than manufactures specs. Risk with the Cobb AP OTS stage 1 map is pretty low but YMMV.

How is the Cobb tune working for you? Plug and Play I'm assuming like you'd expect? Are you happy with the purchase?

Is there any reason to wait for the final version as compared to pulling the trigger on the "beta" version?

I'm running the new Beta V4.0 maps- much smoother in the mid-range than the V3.01 maps. Give them a shot, I'm sure you'll love it.

Do you run the stock throttle map or the linear?

I've seen 18-19 psi midrange but the ignition timing is only around 4-6 degrees peak. Works well with some e85 mixed!

OAM ... thanks for starting this thread .... can you give an update on how the Cobb is going for you? I am getting an itchy finger on the trigger and was wondering to wait for upgraded software versions .....

Thanks!

Sorry missed this post till now.

So far the cobb has been great. I'm using the latest beta map now, ver 4.01 I think, running aggressive on stock throttle. I haven't come across any problems or issues if that's what you were wondering. Definitely notice the increase in power. Had it on the track for the first time, for myself and the 1m, and it performed better than I thought it would.

Actually now I'm wondering if I should bother getting a custom cobb tune? My car is completely stock and I don't plan on doing any other performance mods. Is it worth it for me to get a custom cobb tune or should I just stick with the off the shelf maps? One reason I'm considering it is that the off the shelf maps have to be made so they can run at all altitudes, so say a car in Denver at 5000+ feet above sea level and cars at sea level. So I assume they run rich. I figure a custom tune would be tailored to my car and altitude where I do most of my driving. I'm have no clue though. I don't know enough about engines. Is running rich even that big of an issue?
