Prenuptial agreements

-Are you Married?
-Do you have one?
-Do you believe in them?
-If you were about to get married and were asked to sign one, would you?
-Would it effect your decision to get married?

I am happily married, and though part of my wifes family believes in them, we do not believe in them at all, and thus did not use one.

I'm curious as to other peoples thoughts and experiences, in this day and age of frequent divorce.

Mr

I feel "A Pre-Nup is smart and necessary in this day and age".

This is my (half-knowledge)theory:

When im love with my lady(in marriage), my money, assets, etc are hers too.
But, when i hate her(divorced), why wud i want to give even a dime to her?

If a woman is sensible(?), she wudnt mind signing a pre-nup.

'nuff said: if any woman on e90post agrees with me, drop me a line

-Are you Married? NO
-Do you have one? NO
-Do you believe in them? YES
-If you were about to get married and were asked to sign one, would you? I'll make her sign
-Would it effect your decision to get married? YES

I am not and have not yet been married but I will definitely have a prenup...I did grow my company to have someone else take part of it away down the road. I think many business owners will feel the same way.

Even more important if Florida has a community property regime. (I think it does, just as Texas).

can't have free love AND marriage? I seem to be the lucky one, I did the first time around. She took her creidt card bills, I took mine, she took one car, I took the other, then after a few months we switched cars.

p.s. we're still friends 15+ years later.

I don't believe in them, but if my wife really felt she wanted that extra protection, I would sign it. In states where equitable distribution is the standard, it is rather easy to identify what's non-marital vs. marital property to split.

I don't make enough money to require a pre-nup. If my wife and I split she'll get half of the $10.00 in the bank and some crumbs from an old Twinkie that I left in the couch.

The same reason why you have car insurance is why you should have a pre-nup. You never think you'd get into an accident, nor will you ever think you'll divorce going into a marriage. Yet if that trainwreck hits, you will be thankful for that insurance/pre-nup.

A pre-nup is smart, but I would not say it's exactly necessary. I agree on the sharing of assets during a marriage obviously, it's digging into things during the divorce that were not exactly yours but just a perk to the marriage that is the issue.

I will definately mention it when it comes to the marriage time because I will be taking over my family business and I am will be the one putting the downpayment on the house. There is no reason she should get a part of the business my dad has worked so hard to build nor a reason to outright get a house that I put the $20K+ downpayment on.

If I were to get married, I'd stand to lose too much if I were to ever get divorced.

So yes, I too would get a prenuptial agreement.

Being a bit older and having seen several of my friends lose almost everything in divorce and struggling to start over, I would want to protect myself. IMHO

If you have assets like a family business and DO NOT get one, make sure you at least get a valuation on the business. GENERALLY the only community assets that are up for the split are what is GAINED during the marriage.

Now spousal support, that's a whole nother thing . . . You have to keep her in the lifestyle she's grown accustomed to. So treat her right, it's Friday, anything she wants off the dollar menu!!!!

Tough call.. But seeing the trend of women i've been comin in contact with, it's gonna be either a pre-nup or no marriage at this pace.

I'm not married yet; but when/if I get married, I will be getting one.
She has a simple choice – sign the pre-nup and become my wife, or don't sign and stay my girlfriend. With that in mind, if she asked me to sign one as well, I'm fine with that (though I've yet to meet a girl who's said she believes in them).

I wouldn't say flat-out they're necessary. It's all dependent upon your situation. If you have a lot of assests, your own business, or expect a large inheritance…I vote for getting one.

Keep in mind that in some states, the pre-nup can expire if it's not renewed after a set number of years, or having a child.

I agree, you have made an agreement with God til death that you two will be married, so divorce would not be an option.
